SAVANNAH, Ga.- North Carolina A&T swept a double-header from Savannah State by scores of 11-10 and 7-2 in games played at Tiger Field.
In the first game, A&T scored three runs in the top of the eighth to break open a tie game while in the second game, the Aggies broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning.
Trevor McKenna pitched six innings and struck out nine batters for the Tigers in the opener.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. A&T added two more runs in the top of the second for a 3-1 edge but in the bottom half of the inning,
Kyle Gerdts, who had a RBI in the first inning, singled home Brandon Barnes to pull SSU within 3-2.
Khayld Cox and
Bryce Luken drove in runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the Tigers on top 4-3.
A three-run home run by Adan Ordonez in the top of the fifth gave A&T a 6-4 lead but Savannah State answered in their turn at the plate , scoring three runs on one hit to regain the lead, 7-6.
The Tigers added a run in the sixth when Gerdts scored on a wild pitch for a 8-6 lead.
North Carolina A&T tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh but a two-run double by Gerdts put SSU ahead 10-8.
In the eighth, A&T scored three times off three hits to get the win.
Gerdts had four RBI for the Tigers while
Jalen Atterbury had three hits and scored three runs.
Paul Sheffield pitched one inning and gave up three hits, three runs and two walks while striking out two to take the loss.
SSU left 12 men on base, had 14 hits and made one error.
Ordonez drove in five runs for the Aggies. Noah Dyals pitched three innings and surrendered three hits and struck out four to get the win.
A&T had 14 hits, made two errors and left nine men on base.
In the second game, Milton Rivera hit a solo home run in the first inning to give the Aggies the early lead.
A&T added another run in the second to go up 2-0 but
Mason Calloway scored a run for Savannah State in the third to cut their deficit to 2-1.
The Aggies had three hits in the fourth but could only score once. SSU also scored a run in the inning when Daryl Harper hit a RBI single.
Savannah State made two errors in the fifth inning and the result was A&T getting four runs off three hits to increase their lead to 7-2.
The Tigers only had four hits in the game with Cox,
Jorge Lopez, Harper and Larry Silmon all getting a single.
Greg Smith took the loss. Smith struck out five batters in 4.2 innings while giving 10 hits, seven runs and two walks.
SSU (12-34,3-17) made three errors and left four on base.
Rivera had two hits and two RBI for the Aggies.
Marcello Betances took home the win. Betances struck out six in six innings and gave up four hits, two runs and two walks.
A&T (24-21,13-7) had 12 hits, made two errors and left eight on base.
