Tigers Split Double-header With NCCU

DURHAM, N.C.- Savannah State split a double-header with North Carolina Central, in games played at the Durham Athletic Park.

The Tigers won the first game 12-7 but lost the second game 4-2.

In the opener, SSU led 9-0 after the fourth inning and held on for the win.

Jorge Lopez hit a two-run single in the first inning, Jalen Atterbury hit a RBI single in the second and Lopez hit a RBI double in the third for a 4-0 advantage.

Savannah State struck for five runs in the fourth as Atterbury hit a RBI double, Kyle Gerdts hit a RBI single, Khayld Cox, who laid down a bunt to reach base, scored on a wild pitch, Lopez hit a RBI single and Daryl Harper drove in a run when he reached on a fielder's choice.

NCCU scored two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to trim their deficit to 9-4.

Harper hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh but the Eagles scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 11-5.

Bryce Luken scored a run for SSU in the eighth while North Carolina Central left the bases loaded but managed to score twice for the final runs of the game.

The Tigers had 13 hits and left eight men on base.  In the field, they made one error but turned four double plays.

Lopez had four hits and drove in five runs, Atterbury had three hits and drove in two runs while Harper had three RBI. Luken scored three times while Cox and Gerdts crossed home plate twice.

Austin Robinson was the winning pitcher. Robinson  pitched seven innings, gave up 12 hits, five runs and six walks.

Corey Joyce had two hits and two RBI for NCCU. Jeff Hagen was the losing pitcher. Hagen lasted 2.2 innings and gave up five hits and four runs.

The Eagles had 14 hits, made three errors and left 12 men on base.

In the second game, NCCU scored three unearned runs in their win over the Tigers.

North Carolina Central scored twice in the first inning for a 2-0 lead but SSU tied the score in the top of the third as Cox hit a two-run homer.

The Tigers made two errors in the bottom of the third which led to what turned out to be the game wining runs.

SSU made four errors in the game and could only manage two hits.

Trevor McKenna lasted six innings on the mound for Savannah State and gave up four hits, four runs and four walks while striking out two.

Joyce scored twice for the Eagles while Jon Figueroa earned the win while Justice Sampson got the save. Figueroa struck out seven in six innings while giving up two runs, two hits and three walks. Sampson pitched one inning and struck out two while giving up no runs, hits or walks.
