CULLOWHEE, N.C.- Five different Western Carolina players hit home runs as the Catamounts defeated Savannah Stater 21-1 in a non-conference game played at Hennon Stadium.
Savannah State (11-28) had a tough time at the plate and could only get five hits.
The Tigers scored their only run in the top of the eighth.
Jorge Lopez was hit by a pitch, Jalen Atterbury singled to right field and Hector Benitez drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Lopez to score while Atterbury and Benitez advanced a base. Bryce Luken walked to re-load the bases but SSU could not score any more runs.
Atterbury had a pair of singles for Savannah State.
Alex Wright suffered the loss on the mound. Wright gave up six runs, seven hits and two walks in his one inning on the mound.
Colby Rhea gave up four hits, five runs and three walks in his two innings, Justin Washington lasted three innings and gave up five hits, four runs and four walks while striking out four and Shawn Sausville pitched the final two innings in which he struck out one and issued one walk while giving up six hits and five runs.
The Tigers finished the game with five hits, one error and left eight runners on base.
WCU (20-19) finished the game with 21 hits and one fielding error but left 11 runners stranded on the base-pads.
Bryson Bowman, Matt Smith, Caleb Robinson, Justin Sparks and Andrew Robinson all hit home runs for Western Carolina. On the day, Bowman had four hits, drove in seven runs and scored four times.
Jacob Breakfield was the winning pitcher. Breakfield did not allow a run in his four innings and struck out four while giving up three hits and one walk.
The Catamounts scored twice in the first inning, six times in the second and four times each in the third and fourth innings. WCU scored their final five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
