Smith Pitches Well In Loss To Eagles

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State's Greg Smith had a good day on the mound. The 6-foot-6 sophomore from struck out seven batters while yielding just one run in his six innings of play.

The trouble was that the damage was already done when Smith's number was called.

North Carolina Central scored five times the first inning and added five more runs in the top of the second as the Eagles cruised to a 10-5 conference victory over SSU, in a game played at Tiger Field.

The win by NCCU completes the Eagles a three-game weekend sweep over Savannah State.

Tiger starter Alex Wright lasted just two-thirds of an inning, surrendering five runs and his replacement, Spencer Gillis, gave up four runs in one third of an inning.

Smith entered the game in the second inning and lasted until the seventh. Freshman Colby Rhea pitched the final two innings and struck out two batters while giving up one hit.

Down 10-0, Savannah State (9-15) got on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, the Tigers left the bases loaded but was able to score once as Hector Benitez led off with a walk and scored on a double by Marcus Mitchell.

SSU was able to score three times in the fifth.

Jalen Atterbury singled to right and scored on a double by Benitez while Bryce Luken reached on a error by the short stop and scored on a single by Turner Davis. A single by Kyle Gertds allowed Benitez to cross home plate to make the score 10-4.

Savannah State left the bases loaded in the sixth but did not score but the Tigers added a final run in the bottom of the eighth when Jorge Lopez walked a scored after Luken doubled to left field.

The Tigers ended the game with six hits while NCCU collected 16. Both teams made three errors.

Benitez scored twice for SSU who dropped their seventh straight game and remains winless in the MEAC.

Zach Michalski had three hits for NCCU (13-11) while Tyler Penner was the winning pitcher. Penner pitched 1.1 inning and only gave up one hit.
