Tigers Drop Pair To NCCU

SAVANNAH, Ga.- North Carolina Central defeated Savannah State in a double-header played at Tiger Field by scores of 10-1 and 19-1.

In the first game, SSU's Trevor McKenna gave up nine hits, four runs and three walks in 5.1 innings of work. Paul Sheffield pitched 2.2 innings and surrendered one hit, one run and two walks but Jacob Morrison was rocked for five runs, five hits and three walks in his two-thirds of an inning on the mound. Jan Concevitch was the final SSU pitcher. Concevitich pitched one-third of an inning  and only gave up one hit.

At the plate, the Tigers had eight hits and scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth when Bernard Barnes, who doubled, scored on a pass ball.

SSU left the bases loaded in the third and fifth innings and stranded two runners in the eighth.

Barnes had two doubles for Savannah State.

North Carolina Central scored once in the third, twice in the fourth, once in the sixth and eighth and five times in the ninth.

The Eagles, who had 17 hits, was led by Zach Michalski who had four hits, drove in four runs and scored twice. Devin Sweet pitched seven innings and struck out four while giving out five hits and no runs.

In the second game, NCCU had 26 hits as they scored twice in the second and third innings, one each in the fourth and fifth, four runs in the fifth and nine in the top of the seventh.

With the score 4-0 after three and a half innings of play, Savannah State scored.

Jacob Lightle and Hector Benitez walked while Kyle Gerdts laid down a bunt to load the bases.Lightle scored when Bryce Luken hit into a fielders choice.

The Eagles responded with 15 unanswered runs to end the contest.

Gerdts had two hits for Savannah State, who is on a six game losing skid. Austin Robinson took the loss. Robinson pitched 3.1 innings and gave up 12 hits, five runs and two walks while striking out two.

Landon Fraley was the winning pitcher, going six innings and giving up five hits, three walks and one run while striking out five.

Jake Raby hit a three run home run for NCCU (12-11) in the seventh and finished the contest with three hits, five RBI and scored three times.
