WBB Sets School Record in 3-Pointers as SSU defeats SCSU 53-45 on Senior Night Thursday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team made five 3-pointers to record 126 made 3-pointers this season to set the school record for a single season in the Division I era as the Lady Tigers (11-18, 8-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated South Carolina State University (5-22, 2-14 MEAC) 53-45 on Senior Night Thursday in home finale.
 
The Lady Tigers beat the previous record of 122 made 3-point field goals set last season and recorded 10 blocks against the Bulldogs to tie the school record with 160 blocks set in 2011-12 season. 
 
Senior center Tiyonda Davis recorded her seventh double-double with 12 rebounds and 10 points and tied a career-high with eight blocks and added two steals, while senior guard Kenyata Hendrix added 11 points, five assists and three rebounds.
 
Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss added eight points and eight rebounds, while senior forward Jeremica Edwards added five rebounds, four points and three assists and senior guard Rhianna Warren added seven points. 
 
A jumper by Davis gave the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead with 9:23 remaining in the first quarter, but a basket by South Carolina State tied the game at two with 8:26 left.  Savannah State scored 13 of the next 17 points to take a nine-point lead, 15-6, after the first quarter.
 
A Bulldog three-pointer started the scoring in the second quarter and to break a scoreless streak of 6:16 for SCSU and to cut the lead to six-points, 15-9, with 8:08 left in the quarter, but Savannah State scored the next four points to increase its lead to 10 points, 19-9, with 6:54 left.  South Carolina State scored the next eight points to cut the lead to two points, 19-17, with 2:28 remaining, but a Hendrix 3-pointer gave the Lady Tigers a five-point lead, 22-17, at the half. 
 
Two made free throws by Hendrix gave the Lady Tigers a seven-point lead, 24-17, with 9:29 remaining in the third quarter, but a Bulldog layup cut the lead to five points, 24-19, with 7:23 left.  Savannah State scored the next five points to increase its lead to 10 points, 29-19, with 6:08 remaining, but the Bulldogs scored 16 of the next 24 points to cut the lead to two points, 37-35.  The Lady Tigers scored the final four points to take a seven-point lead, 42-35, after the third quarter.
 
Savannah State scored the first three points of the fourth quarter to take a 10-point lead, 45-35, with 7:40 remaining in the quarter, but the Bulldogs scored the next four points to cut the lead to six points, 46-39, with 6:15 left.  The Lady Tigers scored the next three points to increase their lead back to 10 points at 49-39 with 4:01 left, but SCSU scored six of the next nine points to cut the lead to seven points, 52-45, with 59 seconds left, but a Moss free throw gave the Lady Tigers the eight point win. 
 
The Bulldogs were led by Alexis Scott with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while JaQuanna Murray added 11 rebounds, Bryeasha Blair added 10 points and five points and Jahmia Bradley added eight points and eight rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers start postseason play with the MEAC Championship starting on Monday and finishing with the championship game Saturday, March 11.
