Rattlers Defeat Tigers in Final Game of Weekend Series

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  Florida A&M completed a three game weekend sweep of Savannah State with a 15-6 win at Moore-Kittles Field.

The Rattlers led 10-1 after three innings of play and never looked back.

SSU (9-11, 0-3 MEAC) had the bases loaded in the first inning as Hector Benitez and Bryce Luken getting singles and Turner Davis reaching base courtesy of a walk. Jalen Atterbury was hit by a pitch which allowed Benetiz to score and give the Tigers the early lead.


FAMU answered with five runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and two runs in the third.

Savannah State loaded the bases in the fourth inning but just like in the first inning could only manage to score one run.

Bernard Barnes, Jacob Lightle and Kyle Gerdts all singled to reach base. Barnes scored with Bryce Luken was issued a walk to make the score 10-2.

FAMU scored four times off of two hits in the sixth to increase their lead to 14-2.

Savannah State gained a little ground by scoring four times in the sixth with Joshua Pittell, Daryl Harper, Luken and Davis crossing home plate.

Ben Ellzey hit a solo home run, his second homer of the game in the eighth for the final run of the contest.


The game was a slug-fest with FAMU getting 15 hits and SSU collecting 13.

Both teams left 12 runners on base but the Tigers made three errors while the Rattlers made just one.

Luken had three hits and drove in a pair of runs for Savannah State

Alec Kliphouse took the loss. He lasted one third of an inning and gave up five runs, three hits and three walks.

Ellzey had two home runs for FAMU (14-5, 5-1) and ended the game with four hits, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Aubrey McCarty pitched five innings and struck out seven to get the win.
