SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's tennis team (0-14) fell to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Norfolk State University (1-4) 4-2 Sunday in a nonconference battle at Tiger Tennis Courts.
Norfolk State won at the No. 6 singles position by default to take a 1-0 lead and took a 2-0 lead after Aranza Mellet defeated senior
Jennyfer Vivas 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles position and took a 3-0 lead after Bruna Goncalves defeated senior
Bria Burrows 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles position.
Junior
Rachida El Kateb got SSU on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Ana Popovic at the No. 2 singles position to cut the lead to 3-1 and senior
Sandy Lochu defeated Dajana Cvjetkovic 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles position to cut the lead to 3-2.
The match came down to the No. 3 singles position between NSU's Paula Fortuno and SSU's freshman
Lili-Morgan Pastore. Fortuno won the first set 6-4 and with the second set tied at six, the two played a tiebreaker point as Fortuno won 7-4 to win the set and to clinch the match for the Spartans.
With the match clinched, the doubles competition was not played.
The Lady Tigers continue their homestand with North Carolina Central University (0-9, 0-0 MEAC) Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Tiger Tennis Courts.
