Hendrix and Moss Leads WBB to a 59-53 Win Over NSU Monday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss led the Savannah State University women's basketball team with 16 points, while senior guard Kenyata Hendrix added 13 points as the Lady Tigers (9-14, 7-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated Norfolk State University (12-10, 7-4 MEAC) 59-53 to win its third consecutive and the seventh in the last eight games Monday night in Tiger Arena.
 
Moss shot 5-for-8 from the floor and added two rebounds, while Hendrix added four rebounds and two assists.  Senior forward Jeremica Edwards added 10 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Deyja Brown added six points and six rebounds.
 
Senior center Tiyonda Davis, who was named the MEAC Player and Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, added eight points, seven rebounds and tied a career-high with eight blocks. Davis made three field goals to give her 364 career made field goals, which ties her for fifth place in school history in the Division I era.
 
Norfolk State scored 10 of the first 14 points of the game to take a six-point lead, 10-4, with 3:09 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers closed out the quarter on a 7-1 run to take a point lead, 11-10, after the first quarter.
 
Savannah State scored six of the first 10 points to increase its lead to three points, 17-14, with 6:30 remaining in the second quarter, but Norfolk State scored nine of the next 10 points to take a five-point lead, 23-18, with 57 seconds left.  A three-pointer by Moss cut the NSU lead to two points, 23-21, at the half.
 
A NSU layup gave the Spartans a 25-21 lead with 8:59 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to take a point lead, 26-25, with 8:10 left.  Norfolk State scored six of the next nine points to take a two-point lead, 31-29, with 4:22 remaining, but Savannah State scored 11 of the final 12 points in the quarter to take an eight-point lead, 40-32, after three quarters.
 
Savannah State scored the first four points of the final quarter to increase its lead to 12 points, 44-32, with 8:31 remaining in the quarter, but Norfolk State scored 15 of the next 24 points to cut the SSU lead to six points, 53-47 with 2:12 left.  The Lady Tigers went 3-for-4 at the free throw line to increase their lead to nine points, 56-47, with 1:24 left, but the Spartans scored six of the final nine points to cut the final deficit to six points.
 
The Spartans were led by Dominique Harper with 15 points and four assists, Jordan Strode with 11 points, Gabrielle Swinson with eight points and Kayla Roberts with six points and six rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers finish the three game homestand with the final nonconference game of the season against Allen University Monday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
