SSU Rallies Past Bulldogs

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State overcame a two-run deficit by scoring four runs in the seventh inning in a 6-4 non-conference win over Alabama A&M.

The contest at Tiger Field was a match-up of former Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) rivals with SSU now being a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Alabama A&M now competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

The Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the first inning.

Hector Benitez led off with a walk and Kyle Gerdts followed with a bunt single. Turner Davis singled to left field which scored Benitez and a sacrifice fly by Jorge Lopez allowed Gerdts to cross home plate for a 2-0 lead.

A&M used the bat of Zeth Malcom to tie the score. Malcom hit a RBI single in the third and another one in the fifth.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth.

The first two batters reached on errors and scored on a single by Dalton Mitchell for a 4-2 lead.

Savannah State left two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to score.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers loaded the bases as Jakeel Daniels was hit by a pitch and Larry Silmon and Benitez drew walks. 

Gerdts walked which allowed Daniels to score a Davis hit a base clearing double that brought home Silmon, Benitez and Gerdts to give SSU a 6-4 lead.

Spencer Gillis earned the win on the mound for the Tigers (4-1). Gillis pitched 2.1 innings in relief and struck out four batters while giving up one hit and one walk.

Davis had two hits and drove in three runs for Savannah State while Gerdts had two hits and scored twice.

Malcom had two hits and drove in two runs for A&M (2-4).

Brandon  Marsonek was the losing pitcher. Marsonek pitched one inning and gave up four runs, three walks and one hit while striking out three.
