Javaris Jenkins scored a season-high 31 points in Savannah State's 102-91 loss at Georgia Southern in a game played in Hanner Fieldhouse before a crowd of 1,105.
Jenkins' 31 points were two points shy of his career-high of 33 which he scored in November 2014 against Cleveland State. The 6-foot-6 senior from Deerfield Beach, Florida shot 12 of 17 from the floor and hit all five of his free throw attempts against GSU. He also made two 3-pointers.Â
Zach Sellers and
Dexter McClanahan both chipped in 10 points for the Tigers. Sellers had six assists while Austin Dasent grabbed seven rebounds to compliment his eight points.
As a team, SSU (3-7) shot 51.5 percent from the field. The Tigers made seven of the 26 shots they took from beyond the arc but made 14 of their 18 free throw attempts.
The Eagles jumped out to a 15-8 lead but SSU rallied to tie the game at 16 when Jenkins made a layup with 13:15 left in the first period.
Down by three, Savannah State received a 3-pointer and a layup from Jenkins and a layup from Dasent to cap a 7-0 run to go ahead 25-22 with 10:39 showing.Â
The game was tied at 39 with 4:44 remaining but GSU ended the period with a 11-4 spurt and went into intermission with a 50-43 edge.
The first half had seven ties and six lead changes. The Tiger reserves outscored the GSU bench players 22-9 in the opening period.
Georgia Southern (6-2) expanded their lead to 61-51 after five minutes of play to start the second half but the Tigers strung together a run and after a 3-pointer by Ty'Lik Evans with 13 minutes left, SSU found themselves down 64-60.
A layup by McClanahan closed the Tigers gap to 78-75 with 6:10 remaining but GSU responded with a 10-2 run to take a 11 point lead with 4:14 left.
GSU was up by a dozen with two and a half minutes left and Savannah State could never get any closer than eight the rest of the way.
Tookie Brown led five Georgia Southern players in double figures with 32 points.Â
The Eagles finished the game shooting 48.5 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from beyond the arc and 74.3 from the free throw line. GSU out-rebounded the Tigers 45 to 31.
