Javaris Jenkins scored 18 points as Savannah State dropped a 113-66 decision to 9
th ranked Texas A&M in a game played at Reed Arena. It was the third game in a row that Jenkins led the Tigers in scoring.
Jenkins, a red-shirt senior, made 7 of 15 shots from the floor, a connected on four 3-pointers. He also had four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals.
Zach Sellers and
Dexter McClanahan added 10 points apiece. Alante Feener had a team-high six rebounds to go with his nine points.
The crowd of 6,339 saw Savannah State, who was playing their second contest of a seven game road stretch, shoot 33.8 percent from the field, 30 percent from beyond the arc and 57.1 percent from the free throw line.
Tyler Davis' layup gave Texas A&M an early 2-0 lead but back to back 3-pointers by Jenkins and Sellers put the Tigers ahead 6-2.
A&M (9-1) responded with 12 unanswered points to go ahead 14-6 but SSU rallied to tie the game at 17 when Austin Dasent nailed a 3-pointer at the 13:30 mark.
A dunk by Davis gave the Aggies a 24-19 edge but a 3-pointer by Jenkins whittled the Tigers (3-9) deficit to two with 10:50 showing.
A&M answered with 11 straight points to go ahead 35-22 with 6:45 left. 3-pointers by SSU bench players Jahir Cabeza and John Grant and a tip-in by McClanahan trimmed the A&M lead to 35-30.
The Aggies closed the first half with a 17-3 spurt to take a 52-33 cushion into the half.
During the first period, A&M used their size to outscore the Tigers 28-4 in the paint. The Aggies also had a 20-5 edge in fast break points while Savannah State's bench players outscored the A&M reserves, 11-9.
After five minutes of action in the second half, Texas A&M expanded their lead to 67-40. A 3-pointer by TJ Starks made the score 84-45 with 10:26 left in the contest.
A dunk by Savion Flagg put the Aggies into triple digits (100-56) with four and a half minutes left and a Chris Collins layup gave SSU their largest deficit of the evening at 111-61 with just under two minutes remaining.
Texas A&M had seven players in double figures, including all five starters, and were paced by DJ Hogg's 18 points.
The Aggies out-rebounded SSU 65 to 35. A&M finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, 42.1 percent from beyond the arc and 58.3 percent from the free throw line.
