Chenault Leads Volleyball; SSU Falls to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga.  – Freshman middle blocker Tyran Chenault led the Savannah State University women's volleyball with six kills as the Lady Tigers (3-24) fell to Georgia Southern University (8-19) 3-0 (14-25, 18-25, 13-25) Monday night in Hanner Fieldhouse.
 
Chenault had six kills on eight attempts for a .750 hitting percentage and added a block, while senior setter Alee Quint led the team with 12 assists and freshman libero Leiri Melendez led the team with a match-high eight digs.
 
Junior outside hitter Jennifer Rosado, freshman setter Salma Gonzalez and freshman middle blocker Oneillia Fuller added four kills each, while Rosado added two blocks, two digs and two assists and Gonzalez added five assists.
 
Georgia Southern scored five of the first seven points to take a three-point lead, 5-2, in the first set, but Savannah State scored the next three points to tie the set at five.  The Eagles scored 12 of the next 19 points to take an eight-point lead, 17-9, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to cut the lead to six points, 17-11.  GS outscored SSU 8-3 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
 
Savannah State scored the first three points of the second stanza for a 3-0 lead, but Georgia Southern scored five of the next six points to take a point lead, 5-4.  The Eagles scored five of the next nine points to increase the lead to two points, 10-8, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to tie the set at 10.  GS outscored SSU 15-8 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
 
The Lady Tigers scored two of the first three points to take a point lead, 2-1, in the final frame, but Georgia Southern scored nine of the next 12 points to take a six-point lead, 10-4.  Savannah State scored three of the next four points to close within four points, 11-7, but the Eagles outscored SSU 14-6 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
 
The Eagles were led by Lauren Reichard with 11 kills on 12 attempts for a .917 hitting percentage, Landon Jones with 20 assists and Cathrine Murray with seven digs.
 
The Lady Tigers face South Carolina State University Sunday at 1 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium for Senior Day for the season finale.
