Grant Leads Tigers In Loss To Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Tex.- John Grant came off the bench to score a season-high 18 points in Savannah State's 103-69 loss to Texas Tech, in a game played at United Supermarkets Arena.

The crowd of 6,614 saw Grant shoot 7 of 10 from the field and make 4 of 7 of his 3-point attempts. The Baltimore, Maryland native scored 16 of his points in the second period.

The Red Raiders led 13-4 after five minutes of play and that lead rose to 25-9 at the 11:38 mark.

Savannah State responded with a layup and free throw by Jahlin Smith and a 3-pointer and a jumper from Zach Sellers to whittle their deficit to 25-17 with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half.

Texas Tech used a 9-2 spurt to go ahead 34-19.

A free throw by Dexter McClanahan got the Tigers within 11 with 1:44 left but Texas Tech scored the final six points of the period and went into intermission with a 44-27 cushion.

The Tigers (2-5) opened the second period with layups from McClanahan, and Alante Feener and a 3-pointer by Grant to close their gap to 47-34.

Texas Tech answered with six straight points before Grant nailed a jumper with 15:03 showing on the clock.

The Red Raiders then reeled off a 13-0 run to increase their advantage to 66-36 with 12:40 left. A Jahir Cabeza 3-pointer at the 12:22 mark stopped the bleeding for SSU.

Tech used a 13-5 run to grab their largest lead of the afternoon at 88-46 with 6:19 left.

The Tigers could only get as close as 31 the remainder of the game.

McClanahan and Sellers both added nine points for Savannah State. McClanahan grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

SSU shot 35.9 percent from the field, made 68.4 percent of their free throws and 24.4 percent of their 3-point attempts.

Niem Stevenson and Jarret Culver both had 18 points for Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders (6-0) made 52.7 percent of their shots from the floor, 32 percent of their 3-point attempts and 81 percent of their free throws. Tech out-reb
