CHATTANOOGA, Tn.- Savannah State defeated Alabama State 101-97, giving SSU head coach
Horace Broadnax his 200
th career win as a head coach.
The game was played in McKenzie Arena as part of the Cayman Island Classic.
Dexter McClanahan led five SSU players in double figures with 17 points. McClanahan scored 15 of those points in the second half.
Ed Jones opened the game with a pair of free throws for Alabama State but a 3-pointer by Zach Sellers would put the Tigers ahead.
The Tigers jumped out to a 16-9 lead but ASU would battle back to knot the game at 24 with 7:56 left in the first half.
SSU responded with ten unanswered points to grab a 34-24 lead at the 5:59 mark.
A layup by Terrance LeFlore would get the Hornets within 36-34 with three minutes remaining but Savannah State would end the period with a 9-2 spurt to take a 45-36 lead into intermission.
McClanahan started the second half with a layup that pushed the Tigers advantage to 11.
Alabama State trailed by nine with 13:44 left but a dunk by SSU freshman Ralueke Orizu started a 9-2 run that expanded the Hornet's deficit to 72-56 with 11:34 left.
The Hornets put together a 18-6 run that got them within 78-74 with 6:18 remaining.
Down 87-80, ASU's Jacoby Ross hit a 3-pointer followed by a layup and a free throw to whittle their deficit to 87-86 with 3:25 left to play.
The Tigers, who went the final three minutes making just one field goal, ended the game making nine of ten free throw attempts.
Isaiah Felder and Alante Fenner each scored 16 points for Savannah State (2-3) while Sellers added 14 and Marcus Glenn contributed 10. Sellers dished out six assists and Jahlin Smith had nine rebounds and nine points.
SSU shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the second half and 42.5 percent for the game. The Tigers made 41.7 percent of their 3-point attempts and went 24 of 34 from the free throw line.
Ross led the Hornets (0-7) with a game-high 20 points.
Alabama State out rebounded SSU 47 to 42.
ASU made 48.6 percent of their shots from the floor, made 45.5 percent of their 3-point shots and went 12 of 16 from the charity stripe.
