Tigers Lose At Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md.- D'Vonn Gibbons and David Handler each passed for two touchdowns but it would not be enough as Savannah State would remain winless after a 48-28 defeat from Morgan State.

The crowd of 11,865 at Hughes Stadium saw SSU score from their first offensive play from scrimmage when Gibbons threw a 83-yard touchdown pass to Uriah Oliver. Giovanni Lugo added the extra point and the Tigers led 7-0 with 11:38 remaining in the first quarter.

The rest of the first half belonged to Morgan State (1-5) as the Bears answered with 21 points in the first quarter and 21 more in the second quarter to take a 42-7 lead into intermission.

Eric Harrell scored on a run yard run, Amonta Poteat caught a 21 yard touchdown pass from Elijah Staley and Deontaye White returned a blocked punt six yards for a score for MSU's first quarter scores. In the second quarter, Herb Walker scored on a four yard run, Staley threw a 60 yard touchdown pass to Manassah Bailey and Maurice Lewis picked up a fumble and returned it nine yards for a touchdown.

Savannah State scored on their first possession of the third quarter when Gibbons threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Derek Kirkland with 12:03 left in the quarter. The key play in the six play, 45 yard drive was a 40 yard pass play from Gibbons to Cameron White.

With 18 seconds left in the quarter, Staley threw a six-yard touchdown to Brandon Jones to increase Morgan State's lead to 48-14. The PAT was blocked. 

The Tigers added a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter with Handler throwing touchdown passes to Charles Barnes and Kirkland. Barnes' 41 yard touchdown catch happened with 6:56 left  to complete a six play, 72 yard drive. Key plays on the drive were Handler completing passes of 14 and 29 yards to Jontae Baker and D'Andre Snead respectively. Kirkland's two-yard reception took place with 31 seconds remaining to complete a 10 play, 86 yard drive. During that possession, Handler completed key passes to White (16 and 15 yards), Jaylen McCloud (17 yards) and Kirkland (11 yards).

The loss drops Savannah State to 0-6 and dating back to last season, extends their losing streak to nine games..

The 28 points were the most scored by the team this season. The Tigers also had a season-high 311 passing yards but also a season-low minus 8 rushing yards.

Gibbons passed for a career-high 160 yards as did Handler who threw for 151 yards.

McCloud, who has seen limited action, ran for a season-best 22 yards. Kirkland had four catches for 27 yards and two touchdowns while White had three receptions for 71 yards.

Stefen Banks had 10 tackles for the SSU defense.

Morgan State, who won their first game of the season, had 462 yards of offense while their defense sacked SSU's quarterbacks seven times.

Harrell ran for 114 yards while Walker added 109 on the ground. Staley passed for 220 yards Bailey had five catches for 116 yards. Rico Kennedy had nine tackles for the defenders.
