Davis Records Her Second Consecutive Double-Double as WBB Falls 55-49 at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior center Tiyonda Davis recorded her second consecutive double-double, the third this season, with a career-high 17 points and 17 rebounds as Howard University (9-9, 5-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) snapped Savannah State University women's basketball team's (6-14, 4-4 MEAC) four game winning streak with a 55-49 win in Burr Gymnasium.
 
Davis shot 7-for-12 from the floor and added two assists, three blocks and a steal, while senior forward Jeremica Edwards also recorded a double-double with 14 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor and 10 rebounds.
 
Senior guard Rhianna Warren, junior guard Lauryn Fields and graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss each added six points.
 
Savannah State scored eight of the first 13 points of the game to take a three-point lead, 8-5, with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter, but Howard finished the quarter scoring the final 10 points to take a seven-point lead, 15-8, after the first quarter.
 
Savannah State scored nine of the next 13 points to cut Howard's lead to two points, 19-17, with 5:43 remaining in the quarter, but a Howard basket increase its lead to four points, 21-17, with 3:48 left. A three-point play by Lauryn Fields cut the lead to a point, 21-20, with 2:30 left, but Howard finished the first half outscoring SSU 7-2 to take a six-point halftime lead.
 
A basket by Warren cut the HU lead to four points, 28-24, with 9:41 remaining in the third quarter, but Howard scored 16 of the next 23 points to increase its lead to 13 points, 44-31, with 2:49 left.  The Lady Tigers scored the final six points to cut the lead to seven points, 44-37, after the third quarter.
 
A Howard layup increase the Bison lead to nine points, 46-37, with 6:49 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored 12 of the next 16 points to cut the HU lead to a point, 50-49, with 1:34 left.  Howard scored the final five points to win by six points.
 
The Bison was led by Te'Shya Heslip with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Sydni Johnson added 14 points and five rebounds and Erin Blaine added 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers travel to Princess Anne, Md., to face the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (8-9, 2-4 MEAC) Monday at 5:30 p.m. UMES fell to South Carolina State University 67-60 earlier Saturday.
