Davis Records Her Third Consecutive Double-Double as WBB Bounces Back with a 59-58 win at MDES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Senior center Tiyonda Davis recorded her third consecutive double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as the Savannah State University women's basketball team (7-14, 5-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) bounced back, after having its season-high four game winning streak snapped the last time out, with a 59-58 win over University of Maryland Eastern Shore (8-10, 2-5 MEAC) in Hytche Center.
 
Davis, who was named the MEAC Co-Player of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, shot 6-for-8 and added three blocks and a steal.  The Athens, Ga., native has recorded four double-doubles this season and the 14th of her career.  The three blocks moves her into fourth most in school history in a single season in the Division I era with 69 blocks.
 
Graduate student guard Lauren "Gaby" Moss led the team with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting, five rebounds and four assists off the ben, while senior forward Jeremica Edwards and senior guard Kenyata Hendrix each added 11 points, while Edwards added six rebounds and Hendrix added three assists and junior Deyja Brown added six points.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore scored the first eight points of the game to take an 8-0 lead with 7:13 remaining in the first quarter, but Savannah State scored 15 of the next 18 points to take a four-point lead, 15-11, with 2:38 left.  The Hawks scored five of the final seven points to cut the lead to a point, 17-16, after the first quarter.
 
A bucket by MDES at the 8:00 mark gave the Hawks a point lead, 18-17, but the Lady Tigers scored 16 of the next 23 points to take an eight-point lead, 33-25, with 1:53 remaining in the second quarter.  A jumper by the Hawks cut the SSU lead to six points, 33-27, at the half.
 
Savannah State scored the first two points of the third quarter to increase its lead to eight points, 35-27, with 6:50 remaining, but Maryland Eastern Shore scored 13 of the next 16 points to take a two-point lead, 40-38, with 44 seconds left.  Hendrix hit a 3-pointer to give the Lady Tigers a point lead, 41-40, with 24 seconds, but a layup the Hawks at the buzzer gave MDES a point lead, 42-41.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a five-point lead, 47-42, with 7:31 remaining in the quarter, but Maryland Eastern Shore scored the next four points to pull within a point, 47-46, with 6:40 left. 
 
Savannah State scored eight of the next 10 points to increase its lead to seven points, 55-48, with 3:13 remaining, but the Hawks scored the next six points to close within a point, 55-54, with 1:28 left.  The Lady Tigers scored four of the next five points to increase their lead to four points, 59-55, but a 3-pointer by the Hawks at the buzzer cut the final deficit to a point. 
 
The Hawks were led by Keyera Eaton with 15 points and six rebounds, Moengaroa Subritzky with nine points and six rebounds and Alexus Hicks and Tori Morris each added seven points and seven rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers return home for a three-game homestand starting with the conference leader Hampton University (13-7, 7-0 MEAC) Saturday at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
