SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs as the Savannah State University volleyball team (0-19, 0-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to North Carolina A&T State University (3-9, 1-0 MEAC) 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 25-27) in the Lady Tigers MEAC home opener Friday night in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium to begin SSU's six-game homestand.
The Long Beach, Calif., native also added six assists, two service aces, a block and recorded a .333 hitting percentage, while junior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 20 assists and senior libero
Alexis Washington added 12 digs.
Freshman middle blocker
Dominique Ingram added eight kills and three blocks, while senior middle blocker
Gabrielle Nathaniel recorded four kills.
NCAT scored seven of the first nine points in the first set to capture a 7-2 lead, but the Lady Tigers scored seven of the next nine points to tie the set at nine. The Aggies scored eight of the next nine points to take a seven-point lead, 17-10, forcing a Savannah State timeout. SSU outscored NCAT 9-8 during the rest of the set, but the Aggies captured the six-point set and to take a 1-0 lead.
With Savannah State holding a point lead, 7-6 in the second frame, the Aggies scored four of the next five points to take a two-point lead, 10-8. The Lady Tigers scored the next two points to tie the set at 10. NCAT scored four of the next five points to take a three-point lead, 14-11, but the Lady Tigers scored the next five points to capture a two-point lead, 16-14, forcing an Aggie timeout. After the timeout, NCAT outscored SSU 11-4 during the rest of the set to capture the five-point set win and to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Aggies scored four of the first five points in the final stanza, but the Lady Tigers scored six of the next 10 points to close within a point, 8-7. NCAT scored three of the next four points to increase its lead to three, 11-8, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to tie the set at 11. NCAT scored five of the next seven points to take a three-point lead, 16-13, but Savannah State scored the next three points to tie the set at 16. The Aggies scored eight of the next 12 points to take a four-point lead, 24-20.
With the Lady Tigers facing match point, Savannah State scored the next four points to tie the match at 24 and to set it to extra points. After each team scored a point to keep the match tied, at 25, NCAT scored the final two points to take the two-point set win and to win the match.
The Aggies were led by Samara Brown with 11 kills, Liz Martino with 31 assists and Keniah Rivera with 12 digs.
The Lady Tigers continue their homestand and host North Carolina Central University Sunday at 1 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
