SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (0-20, 0-4 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to North Carolina Central University (3-8, 2-0 MEAC) 3-0 (23-25, 11-25, 17-25) Sunday afternoon in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
Senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe led the Lady Tigers with eight kills and added nine assists and seven digs, while senior
Gabrielle Nathaniel added seven kills, two digs and two blocks.
Junior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 17 assists and added nine digs and two service aces, while senior libero
Alexis Washington led the team with 16 digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Alaina Monroe and freshman middle blocker
Dominique Ingram each added five kills, while Monroe and graduate student
Justice Dilworth each added five digs.
With the score tied at four in the first set, Savannah State scored the next three points to capture a three-point, 7-4, but N.C. Central scored nine of the next 12 points to take a three-point lead, 13-10, forcing a Lady Tiger timeout. After the timeout, SSU scored six of the next eight point to capture a point lead, 16-15 and extended its lead to three points, 23-20, after scoring seven of the next 12 points. NCCU scored the final five points to capture the two-point set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.
North Carolina Central scored eight of the first nine points to take a seven-point lead, 8-1, in the second frame, but the Lady Tigers scored three of the next four points to close the gap to five, 9-4. NCCU outscored SSU 16-7 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0.
NCCU scored 10 of the first 17 points in the final stanza to take a three-point lead, 10-7. The Eagles outscored SSU 14-6 to take a 11-point lead, 24-13, but the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to close the gap to seven, 24-17 forcing an Eagle timeout. An SSU service error gave NCCU the set win and the match win.
The Eagles were led by Whitney White with eight kills, Paige Phillips with 23 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double, and Kelsey Murphy with 14 digs.
The Lady Tigers continue their six match homestand with South Carolina State University Friday at 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
