TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (0-18, 0-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Florida A&M University (5-11, 2-0 MEAC) 3-0 (11-25, 17-25, 15-25) Sunday in Al Lawson Center.
Senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe led the Lady Tigers with six kills and added five assists, five digs and two blocks, while freshman outside hitter
Dominique Ingram added four kills.
Junior
Alee Quint led the team with 11 assists and added three digs, while senior libero
Alexis Washington led the team with nine digs.
Florida A&M scored the first three points to take a 3-0 lead in the first set, but the Lady Tigers scored five of the next seven points to tie the set at five. The Rattlers scored the next five points to take a five-point lead, 10-5, and outscored SSU 15-6 during the rest of the set to capture the set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Rattlers scored the first five points to take a 5-0 lead in the second frame, but the Lady Tigers scored 11 of the next 18 points to close within a point, 12-11, forcing a Florida A&M timeout. After the timeout, FAMU outscored SSU 13-6 during the rest of the set to capture the set win and to take a 2-0 match lead.
FAMU scored 13 of the first 20 points to take a 13-7 lead in the final stanza, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to close within three points, 13-10. Florida A&M outscored SSU 12-5 during the rest of the set to capture the set win and to win the match.
The Rattlers were led by Maria Yvette Garcia with 14 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double, Valeria Lopez with 30 assists and with 12 digs for a double-double, while Valentina Carrasco added 12 digs. Nicole Abreu also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.
The Lady Tigers host North Carolina A&T State University in SSU's home opener Friday at 6 p.m. and host North Carolina Central University Sunday at 1 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
