CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Savannah State University volleyball team (0-13) dropped both matches Friday at the Bulldog Invitational to Elon University (11-2) 3-0 (9-25, 19-25, 8-25) and to Charleston Southern (5-9) 3-0 (12-25, 28-26, 16-25, 23-25) in McAlister Field House.
Senior setter
Caitlynn Masoe recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs against Charleston Southern. The Long Beach, Calif., native led the Lady Tigers with 16 kills and added 11 assists and 14 digs in two matches, while sophomore outside hitter
Charlinda Colbert added 13 kills and three blocks.
Senior
Alexis Washington led the team with 36 digs, while junior setter
Alee Quint led the team with 28 assists and added 11 digs in two matches.
Elon 3, Savannah State 0
Washington led the Lady Tigers with 20 digs, the second most digs in school history in a three setter since Danielle Sampson recorded 22 digs in three set against Charleston Southern on Sept. 18, 2007.
Sophomore outside hitter Aliana Monroe added 11 digs, while Masoe and Colbert led the team with five kills each. Colbert recorded a .417 (5-0-12) hitting percentage, while Masoe added seven assists and four digs. Junior setter

Savannah State scored three of the first four points in the first set to capture a 3-1 lead, but Elon scored the next six points to take a four-point lead, 7-3. The Lady Tigers scored six of the next eight points to close within a point, 9-8, but the Phoenix outscored SSU 16-1 during the rest of the set, including scoring the last 15 points, to win the set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
Elon scored six of the first 10 points in the second frame to capture a two-point lead, 6-4, but the Lady Tigers scored 13 of the next 19 points to take a five-point lead, 17-12. The Phoenix outscored SSU 13-2 during the rest of the set to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Phoenix scored six of the first seven points to capture a 6-1 lead in the final stanza to force a Savannah State timeout. After the timeout, the Lady Tigers scored two of the next three points to close within four points, 7-3. Elon outscored SSU 18-5 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
The Phoenix were led by Sydney Busa with 11 kills and with 17 digs to capture a double-double, while Rox Wood led the team with 20 assists.
Charleston Southern 3, Savannah State 1
Masoe recorded her second double-double of the season with a team-high 11 kills and 10 digs with four assists, while Washington led the team with 16 digs and Quint led the team with 20 assists.
Colbert added eight digs and three blocks, while graduate student
Justice Dilworth added six kills and 12 digs. Senior middle blocker
Gabrielle Nathaniel recorded 10 digs and freshman outside hitter
Dominique Ingram added five kills and three blocks.
Savannah State scored six of the first 10 points to take a two-point lead, 6-4, early in the first set, but CSU outscored SSU 21-6 during the rest of the set to capture the 13-point set win and to take a 1-0 match lead.
Charleston Southern scored eight of the first 13 points to capture a three-point lead, 8-5, early in the second frame, but the Lady Tigers battled back by scoring the next four points to take a point lead, 9-8. The Buccaneers came back by scoring the next four points to take a three-point lead, 12-9. Savannah State tied the match at 13 after scoring the four of the next five points and the Lady Tigers recaptured the lead by scoring five of the next eight points for a two-point lead, 18-16.
CSU scored the next two points to tie the set at 18, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to take a three-point lead, 21-18. The Bucs scored the next six point to take a three-point lead, 24-21. With the Lady Tigers facing set point, SSU scored the next four points to take a point lead, 25-24. After both teams scored a point to keep the SSU lead at one, 27-26, a CSU attack error gave the Lady Tigers the two-point set win and to tie the match at one.
After a kill from Masoe to start the third stanza, Charleston Southern scored the next five points to take a four-point lead, 5-1, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to cut the lead to three points, 6-3. The Bucs scored five of the next seven points to increase their lead to six, 11-5, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to cut the lead to four, 11-7. CSU outscored SSU 14-9 during the rest of the set to capture the nine-point set win and to take a 2-1 match lead.
Charleston Southern scored four of the first five points in the final set to take a 4-1 lead, but the Lady Tigers scored seven of the next 10 points to take a point lead, 8-7. After CSU scored two of the next three points to tie the match at nine, the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to capture a three-point lead, 12-9 forcing a Charleston Southern timeout.
After the timeout, the Bucs scored three of the next four points to cut the lead to a point, 13-12, but the Lady Tigers scored the next two points to increase their lead back to three points, 15-12. Savannah State scored seven of the next 12 points to increase its lead to four points, 21-17, but CSU outscored SSU 8-2 during the rest of the set to capture the two-point set win and to win the match.
The Buccaneers were led by Brooke Monssen with 20 kills and Connor Malone with 17 kills, while Rachel Smith led the team with 32 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double, and Madison Martin led the team with 17 digs.
The Lady Tigers finish the Bulldog Invitational with a doubleheader Saturday with host The Citadel at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN3 and Austin Peay State at 5 p.m.
