GREENSBORO, N.C.- North Carolina A&T swept Savannah State in a doubleheader by scores of 4-3 and 6-4. Both contests were played at War Memorial Stadium.
In the first game, A&T scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and held Savannah State scoreless the rest of the way.
The Tigers had the bases loaded in the second inning but could only score one run as Jalen Atterbury hit a RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored Bernard Barnes.
Charles Sikes led off the top of the third with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mendez Elder to give SSU a 2-0 advantage.
A&T tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Adan Ordonez hit a two run single.
SSU's
Khalyd Cox led off the top of the fifth with a single and scored after a single by
Jonathan Moore to put the Tigers ahead 3-2.
In the bottom half of the inning, Myles Sowell hit a RBI triple and a ground-out by Milton Rivera allowed Sowell to score and A&T to take a 4-3 lead.
Ryan McCranie pitched 7.2 innings for SSU and struck out five batters, in a losing effort.
Moore and
Cole Bruce both had two hits for the Tigers.
SSU had nine hits, made one error and left six men on base.
Sowell scored twice while Ordenez drove in two runners for A&T.
Robert Peck struck out five batters in six innings to earn the win while Will Greene got the save. Greene pitched three innings and struck out four.
The Aggies had five hits, made two errors and left six men on base.
In the nightcap, Tevelle Clark pitched a four hitter and struck out nine to lead the Aggies to victory.
A&T jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the first inning and two more in the second.
Sikes hit a two run home run for Savannah State(11-36, 6-14 MEAC)Â in the third to whittle their deficit to 5-2.
The Aggies scored a run in the fourth to increase their advantage to 6-2 but SSU would not go away quietly.
In the sixth, Moore walked and advanced to third after a double by Elder. A wild pitch allowed Moore to score while Elder advanced to third base. Elder scored on another wild pitch Savannah State within 6-4 for the final runs of the contest.
Sikes had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the SSU offense while in the field, the Tigers used six pitchers.
Alex Wright was tagged with the loss. Wright started the game and lasted two-thirds of an inning as he gave up two hits, three runs and two walks.
Rivera had two hits and scored twice for A&T while Ordenez had two hits and drove in two runs.
A&T (12-38, 5-15 MEAC) had seven hits and left eight runners on base.
