SSU Falls To Eagles

STATESBORO, Ga.- The Savannah State baseball team dropped a 16-1 decision to Georgia Southern, in a game played at J.T. Clements Stadium.

GSU scored twice in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Tigers cut their deficit in half in the top of the fourth when Charles Sikes drew a walk and came home on a single by Ryan McCranie.

Georgia Southern added four runs in the bottom half of the inning as Cal Baker and Logan Baldwin both hit two run singles for a 6-1 advantage.

In the fifth inning, SSU had the bases loaded but came away empty while the Eagles scored five runs on four hits to increase their lead to 11-1.

Georgia Southern tacked on five more runs in the sixth to round out the scoring.

The GSU pitchers kept the Savannah State batters hitless during the final four innings.

Cole Bruce, Jonathan Moore, Somto Egbuna, Jacob Lightle and McCranie all had one hit for the Tigers. Bruce and Lightle both stole a base in a losing effort.

Justin Washington pitched two innings for SSU (9-21) and struck out three batters while surrendering three hits, two runs and two walks.

Alex Wright, Robert Shreck, Brandon Whitmore, Rex Davis, Greg Hollman and Greg Smith all saw action on the mound for the Tigers.

SSU had five hits, left seven men on base and committed seven errors in the non-conference game.

Baker had four RBI for the Eagles while Evan McDonald had four hits and scored four runs.

Eagle freshman Lawson Humphries pitched five innings and gave up five hits, one run and three walks while striking out three.

GSU (17-12) collected 16 hits and left nine men on base.
