Savannah State Falls To Lancers 7-6

FARMVILLE, Va.- Jon Peterson hit a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth as Longwood posted a 7-6 win over Savannah State in a game played at Bolding Stadium.


Savannah State trailed 5-1 after four innings of play but rallied to score in the fifth and sixth innings to slice their deficit to 5-3.


In the fifth, Jonathan Moore singled to center-field and advanced to third on a throwing error. Moore scored on a ground-out by Mendez Elder. Bernard Barnes hit a RBI triple for SSU in the sixth to make the score 5-3.



The Tigers (9-28) added three more runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead 6-5.


Charles Sikes led off with a double and Moore followed with a single. An error by the pitcher allowed Sikes to score while Moore advanced to third. A ground-out by Elder allowed Moore to cross home plate to tie the game at 5-5. After an out by Jakeel Daniels, Brian Miller singled and Jacob Lightle drew a walk. Cole Bruce hit a double to right field which allowed Miller to score to put Savannah State ahead 6-5.


Longwood scored twice in the first inning and once more in the second for a 3-0 advantage.


The Tigers got on the scoreboard in the third when Sikes singled and came home on a ground-out by Elder.


In the bottom of the fourth, Conner Bastiach hit two-run single to give LU a 5-1 lead.


Elder drove in three runs for the Tigers while Sikes and Moore score two runs apiece.


Trevor McKenna pitched five innings for SSU and gave up five runs while Justin Washington was tagged with the loss. Washington pitched three innings and gave up two runs.


Bastiach had three hits and drove in three runs for Longwood (22-15). Michael Catlin earned the win. Catlin pitched 2.1 innings and gave up one hit while striking out two.


For the game, SSU had 13 hits but made three errors and left nine men on base while Longwood had 12 hits, made two errors and stranded 16 runners.
