IRONDALE, Ala. – The Savannah State University softball team (8-13) defeated Grambling State University (2-13) 8-0 and Mississippi Valley State University (4-14) 11-9 to finish the Tiny Laster Tournament Sunday.
Senior first baseman
Torrian Wright went 3-for-4 (.750) with four runs scored, a double, four RBIs with 1.000 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .714 in both games, while sophomore center fielder
Shelby Eccles batted .667 (4-for-6) with a run scored and two RBIs with a .667 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .714.
Junior pitcher
Amanda Hallman batted .600 (3-for-5) with five runs scored, a double, a home run and four RBIs with a slugging percentage of 1.400 and an on-base percentage of .714, while freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones, senior second baseman
Antonette Smith and junior catcher
Tia Bolden each went 3-for-7 (.429). Jones added three runs scored with a double, while Smith added three RBIs and Bolden added a run scored, a double and two RBIs.
Savannah State 8, Grambling State 0Wright and Hallman led SSU with a perfect 1.000 batting average each going 2-for-2, while Wright added two runs scored, two RBIs and a double and Hallman added two runs scored, four RBIs a double and a home run. Freshman pitcher
Faith Dickerson (1-2) went the distance giving up only one hit with two strikeouts.
Savannah State started the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 5-0 after the first inning. After a pop out to third base, junior left fielder
Chasney Jenkins walked and Jones walked to put runners on first and second with one out.
Wright doubled home Jenkins and advanced Jones to third to lead 1-0 and Hallman's two-run double to bring home Jones and Wright extended its lead to 3-0. Bolden singled to score Hallman and advanced to second on a passed ball. Smith reached on error by the right fielder allowing Bolden to score for a 5-0 lead. A Harris walk to put runners on first and second with one out, but back-to-back pop outs ended SSU's threat.
The Lady Tigers scored the final three runs in the bottom of the second inning for the eight-run win. Jenkins started the inning with a walk and stole second. After a groundout for the first out of the inning, Wright singled home Jenkins and Hallman hit a two-run home run to right center field to lead 8-0.
Grambling State's lone hit came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mercedes Williams hit a one-out base hit.
Grambling State was led by Williams going 1-for-2 at the plate, while Alexus Brown (0-5) took the loss pitching the first inning giving up four earned runs on three hits with three walks. Juliana Dominguez pitched the final 3.0 innings giving up three earned runs on six hits with two walks.
Savannah State 11, Mississippi Valley State 9Eccles led SSU with a 4-for-5 performance with a run scored and two RBIs, while Jones went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Smith went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Singleton went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Hallman (4-6), who scored three times, went the distance giving up five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Savannah State added a run in the top of the first inning after Wright's sacrifice fly to bring home Jenkins and increased the lead to 2-0 after two innings with a run in the top of the second inning after an RBI double by Singleton.
Mississippi Valley State added eight runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-2 lead after three innings, but the Lady Tigers scored five runs in the top half of the next inning.
Eccles started the inning with a single and stole second. Singleton singled home Eccles for the first run of the inning, but a flyout recorded the first out of the inning. Jones singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Jones stole second base and an error by the catcher on the throw to second allowed Singleton to score.
Wright singled home Jones and Hallman's walk put runners on first and second with one out. After a line out to left field for the second out, Smith singled home Wright and Hallman to close out the five-run inning.
The Lady Tigers tied the game at eight in the top of the sixth inning after Eccles RBI single, but MVSU took a run lead with a run scored on a pass ball in the bottom half of the inning to lead 9-8 after six innings.
The Lady Tigers scored the final three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take home the two run win. Jenkins started the inning with a single and Jones single put runners on the corners with no outs. Wright was intentionally walked to load the bases, but a fielder's choice to second base got the lead runner out at home for the first out of the inning and to keep the bases loaded.
Bolden walked to bring home Jones to tie the game at nine, but an RBI groundout to second base by Hallman gave SSU a run lead, 10-9. Harris walked to load the bases, but an RBI single by Eccles, but a groundout to first base ended the threat and to give SSU a two-run win.
MVSU was led by Holly Brown with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, while Deja Talton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Rebekah Clinton (1-8) went the distance giving up 10 earned runs on 15 hits with 10 walks.
The Lady Tigers return home against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent Maryland Eastern Shore Sunday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Lady Tiger Softball Field.
