SSU Splits Doubleheader with Presbyterian after Jones’ Walkoff Home Run in Game Two

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (5-11) split the doubleheader against Presbyterian College (7-6) Wednesday at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
 
The Blue Hose won the first game 12-4 in five innings, while freshman third baseman Cortni Jones hit a walkoff two-run home in the bottom of the seventh inning to give SSU a 6-4 win in game two.
 
Sophomore center fielder Shelby Eccles led SSU with a .600 (3-for-5) batting average with a run scored and an RBI, while junior right fielder Alexis Singleton added a .571 (4-for-7) batting average with two runs scored.  Cortni Jones and Chasney Jenkins each went .500 with Jones going 3-for-6 with two runs scored, two home runs, a double and four RBIs, while Jenkins went 2-for-4 with a runs scored and two RBIs in both games.

Sophomore shortstop Brianna Harris, senior first baseman Torrian Wright, Jones, junior pitcher Amanda Hallman, designated player Molly Lillis, senior second baseman and Eccles all recorded a hit, while Jenkins, Jones and Eccles all recorded an RBI.  Hallman (3-4) took the loss pitching 4.0 innings giving up two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts.
 
PC broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning with a three-run home run to center field to lead the Lady Tigers 3-0 after three innings.
 
The Blue Hose extended its lead to 8-0 after five runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run double.
 
Savannah State got on the board in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to cut the lead to five, 8-3 after four innings.  Jones led off the inning with a solo home run to left field as was followed up by Hallman's walk and Lillis single to center field and advanced on the throw to third to put runners on second and third with no outs.
 
After a groundout for the first out of the inning, Eccles singled to left field to drive home Hallman and advanced to second on the throw to put runners on second and third with one out.  After an RBI groundout by Jenkins, an SSU lineout ended the threat.
 
PC added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 12-3 lead, highlighted by a two-run home run down the right field line.
 
SSU added a run in the bottom half of the inning after an error that brought home Tamara Jones, who pinch ran for Wright, to cut the final margin to eight runs. 
 
The Blue Hose was led by Megan Anderson, who went 2-for-3 with a runs scored and four RBIs, while Hope Rogers went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs.  Sydney Seigler (3-4) picked up the win pitching a complete game giving up four earned runs on eight hits.

Singleton led SSU with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored, while Jenkins and Jones each added two hits. Jenkins went 2-for-2 with a runs scored and an RBI, while Jones went 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs with a home run.  Ashley Eichenlaub (1-4) picked up the win with a complete game giving up four earned runs on six hits.
 
The Lady Tigers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the first inning with three runs to lead 3-0 after the first inning.  Jenkins started with a single through the right side and after a foul out to first base, Singleton singled to left field and Wright walked to load the bases with one out. 
 
Jones was hit by a pitch to bring home Jenkins for the first run of the inning and after a pop up to the second baseman, Eichenlaub reached after the center fielder dropped the ball to allow Singleton and Wright to score.
 
SSU added another run in the bottom of the second inning to lead 4-0 after two innings.  Eccles started the inning with a triple, followed by Jenkins' sacrifice bunt that allowed Eccles to score.
 
PC got on the board in the top of the fourth inning with two runs to cut the lead to 4-2 after four innings after a two-run home run to right field.
 
The Blue Hose tied the game in the top of the sixth inning with two more runs after a two-run double with two outs.
 
After Presbyterian went three-up and three-down in the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Tigers came to bat in the bottom half of the inning.
 
Singleton started the inning with a single to center field and stole second.  After a pop out to the shortstop, Jones stepped up and hit the big walkoff two-run shot to end the game. 
 
The Blue Hose was led by Madison Longanecker, Kelsie Sanchez, Rogers, Anderson, Kersten Legacki and Jenna Harris with one hit each, while Anderson and Legacki added two RBIs each.


The Lady Tigers travel to Irondale, Ala., for the Tiny Laster Tournament this weekend.  SSU starts with Grambling State on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by a doubleheader with Alabama State on Saturday at 12:30 and 3 p.m. and finishes the tournament with Grambling State at 11 a.m. and Mississippi Valley State at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
