IRONDALE, Ala. – The Savannah State University softball team (6-11) no-hit Grambling State University (2-11) during the first day of the Tiny Laster Tournament Friday.
Freshman pitcher
Kasie Johnson (2-1) started the game and pitched the first four innings recording two strikeouts and a walk, while freshman pitcher
Faith Dickerson pitched final three innings recording two strikeouts and a walk.
Freshman catcher
Kelsey Cyrus led SSU at the plate going 2-for-2 with a run scored, while junior fright fielder Alexis Washington, junior designated hitter
Amanda Hallman and sophomore shortstop each went 2-for-4. Singleton added two runs scored and an RBI, while Harris added a run scored and Hallman recorded an RBI.
Savannah State scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0 after one inning of play. After a strikeout to start the game, Harris doubled and moved over to third after a groundout to second base. While senior first baseman
Torrian Wright was batting, an illegal pitch was thrown that allowed Harris to score. Wright walked at the at-bat, but a flyout ended the top of the first inning.
Grambling State went three-up and three-down in the bottom half of the inning and Johnson allowed a two-out walk in the bottom of the second inning to break up the perfect game.
The Lady Tigers scored two more runs in the top of the third inning to increase their lead to three, 3-0, after three innings. After a flyout to start the inning, Singleton singled, followed by Wright's double to bring home Singleton to lead 2-0. After a popout to the first baseman for the second out of the inning, Hallman hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-0.
GSU went three-up and three-down in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lady Tigers, but the Lady Tigers scored the final three runs in the top of the fourth inning to win by six runs.
Cyrus singled to start the inning after a flyout for the first out of the inning, an error by the right fielder allowed pinch-hitter
Peyton Mitchell to reach on base and a Harris singled loaded the bases with one out.
Singleton singled home to drive in Cyrus and to keep the bases loaded to lead 4-0. Sophomore pinch-hitter
Ashley Eichenlaub drove in Mitchell after a fielder's choice to the pitcher that got Harris out at third for the second out of the inning with runners on first and second.
Another GSU error allowed Singleton to score for the third run of the inning and to put runners on first and second with two outs, but a lineout ended the inning.
GSU started the bottom half of the inning with a hit-by-pitch, followed by a groundout to the pitcher that allowed a GSU runner to reach second base. An error by the shortstop put runners on the corners with one out.
A fielder's choice to pitcher, who throw home to get the lead runner and the catcher threw to third base to get the runner out at third for an inning ending double play.
GSU's last chance to score a run came in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a strikeout and a groundout to the pitcher, GSU got a runner on first by an error by the third baseman, followed by a walk and an another error by the third baseman to load the bases with two outs. A flyout to the center field ended the threat.
In the final inning, the Lady Tigers recorded the first two outs with groundouts to the third baseman and second baseman, but a walk to the No. 8 hitter extended the game. A groundout to freshman third baseman
Cortni Jones ended the game to preserve the no-hitter.
GSU was led by Caila Durgan reached on base twice with a hit-by-pitch and error, while Kendalyn Arceneaux also reached on base twice on two errors. Juliana Dominguez (1-6) went the distance giving up four earned runs on nine hits with three walks.
The Lady Tigers continue the tournament in Irondale, Ala., with a doubleheader against Alabama State Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and finishes the tournament on Sunday with Grambling State at 11 a.m. and Mississippi Valley State at 1:30 p.m.
