SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State baseball team lost their 2016 season opener to St. Bonaventure by a score of 7-4 in a game played at Tiger Field.
 
Both teams had eight hits and combined for eight errors with St. Bonaventure making five mistakes.
 
The Bonnies, who compete in the Atlantic 10, scored twice in the top of the first inning.
 
Savannah State would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning as lead-off batter Jalen Atterbury reached base on an error by the third baseman and scored on a triple by Charles Sikes. 
 
SBU added two more runs in the second and fourth innings to extend their advantage to 6-1.
 
The Tigers (0-1) collected two hits in the sixth as they scored one run when Knox Marchman hit a RBI single that scored  Mendez Elder to make the score 6-2. 
 
Ted Dilts hit a solo home run for St. Bonaventure in the top of the seventh while in the bottom of the inning, Atterbury singled and scored on a single by Sikes that cut SSU's deficit to 7-3.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, Elder reached base on a error by the shortstop and with the help of another error was able to cross home plate for the final run of the contest. 
 
Savannah State left ten runners on base while St. Bonaventure left six.
 
Sikes went 2 for 4 for the Tigers and drove in two runs. Jackson State transfer Jakeel Daniels contributed two hits while Atterbury and Elder scored twice. 
 
Greg Hollman, one of four SSU pitchers, was tagged with the loss. Hollman pitched four innings and surrendered six hits, six runs and three walks. 
 
Taishi Terashima and Dilts each had two hits for SBU (1-0) while Thad Johnson scored twice. Drew Teller, who struck five batters in 5.1 innings, earned the win while Reid Van Woert, who struck out five batters in 3.2 innings earned the save.
