Tigers Falter At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- William & Mary had six players in double figures in a 112-85 victory over visiting Savannah State, in a game played at Kaplan Arena.

Savannah State struggled in the opening period, shooting 29.7 percent from the field but improved after intermission to make 47.4 percent of their shots.

After taking 18 free throw shots in the first half, the crowd of 1,377 saw the Tigers only make four attempts from the charity line in the second period.

William & Mary led from start to finish and held SSU without a field goal the final two minutes of the game.

The Tribe scored the first nine points of the contest and led 15-5 after three minutes of action.

A layup by Troyce Manassa trimmed the Tigers deficit to 20-15 with 13:05 left in the half but W&M answered with a 13-3 run to increase their lead to 33-18.

William & Mary led by 12 with 8:24 on the clock but a 18-8 spurt gave the Tribe a 51-29 edge.

The Tribe led by as many as 27 points in the first half and took a 59-34 lead into the break.

SSU trailed by 30 early in the second half before stringing together a 10-0 run behind a 3-pointer by Joshua Floyd, a layup by Austin Dasent, a dunk by Jordan Gaines and a 3-pointer by Dexter McClanahan.

W&M followed McClanahan's trey with back-to-back 3-pointers by Paul Rowley and Daniel Dixon. Not to be outdone, Zach Seller drilled a 3-pointer for the Tigers which was followed by another 3-pointer by Dixon.

A Dixon 3-pointer at the 11:22 mark put the Tribe back up by 30 (86-56).

A layup by Greg Malinowski with 7:49 remaining gave W&M their largest lead of the night at 98-66.

Down by 30 with just under two minutes to go, Robery Kelly made back-to-back 3-pointers for the Tigers and McClanahan converted a pair of free throws to pull SSU within 22 but they would get no closer.

McClanahan and Kelly each had 17 points for the Tigers (3-9) and Floyd added 13 points. Kelly had a team-high eight rebounds.

William & Mary shot 51.4 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Tigers 49 to 42.

Jack Whitman had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Tribe (5-4) while Omar Prewitt scored 21 points and David Cohn dished out 10 assists.
