WBB Defeats Middle Georgia State 67-50 in Exhibition Thursday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Three Savannah State University women's basketball student-athletes scored in double figures as the Lady Tigers defeated Middle Georgia State University 67-50 in the first exhibition game of the season Thursday night in Tiger Arena.
 
Senior forward Lauren "Gabby" Moss and senior guard led the Lady Tigers with 13 points each, while senior center Tiyonda Davis added 11 points.  Moss went 5-for-11 from the floor with three rebounds, three steals, while Hendrix went 6-for-12 from the floor with six steals and Davis went 4-for-7 with a team-high six rebounds.
 
Senior forward Jeremica Edwards went 4-for-8 to score eight points with four rebounds, while senior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw went 3-for-6 for six points and five offensive rebounds.  Junior guard Kierstan Green went 3-for-5 for seven points.
 
Middle Georgia State scored the first two points on free throws to take a 2-0 lead with 9:23 remaining in the first quarter, but the Lady Tigers scored the next 16 points to take a 14-point lead, 16-2, with 3:45 left.  MGSU outscored SSU 7-3 during the rest of the quarter to cut SSU's lead to 10 points, 19-9.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the first six points in the second quarter to increase their lead to 16, 25-9, with 6:54 remaining in the quarter, but the Knights scored the next six points to close within 10 points, 25-15, with 5:20 left.  Savannah State scored the next five points to take a 15-point lead, 30-15, with 3:15 left in the half, but Middle Georgia State scored the final seven points of the quarter to cut SSU's lead to eight, 30-22.
 
Middle Georgia scored the first six points of the third quarter to cut the lead to two points, 30-28, with 8:13 remaining in the quarter.  With Savannah State still holding a two-point lead at 34-32 with 4:41 left, the Lady Tigers scored the next four points to increase their lead to six points, 38-32, with 3:12 left.  MGSU outscored SSU 6-4 during the rest of the quarter to cut the lead to four points, 42-38.
 
After a Middle Georgia State 3-point to begin the final quarter to cut SSU's lead to a point, 42-41, with 9:32 remaining in the game, Savannah State scored nine of the next 10 points to increase its lead to nine points, 51-42 with 5:04 left.  After a MGSU 3-pointer to cut the lead to six points, 51-45, with 4:38 remaining, the Lady Tigers scored the next six points to increase their lead to 12 points, 57-45, with 3:39 remaining.  The Knights scored the next five points to cut the lead to seven points, 57-50, but SSU scored the final 10 points to capture the 17-point win.
 
Middle Georgia State was led by Shaketa Hodges with 21 points and four steals, while Tasicianna Taylor added 10 points, Kianna Delas and Kiana Robbins each added eight points.  Delas added nine assists and six rebounds.
 
The Lady Tigers play their final exhibition game of the season against crosstown rival Armstrong State University Monday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
