DESTIN, Fla. Savannah State blew a 15 point lead and went on to lose to Grambling State 110-104 in the Destin Realty Emerald Coast Classic.
SSU used a 24-4 run to grab a 30-15 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half.
A 3-pointer by Ervin Mitchell trimmed Grambling's deficit to eight with just over five minutes left but SSU responded with a 3-pointer by
Dexter McClanahan, a layup by
Jordan Gaines and a dunk by McClanahan to regain their 15 point cushion.
Down by 15 with 2:41 left, a pair of 3-pointers by Mitchell sent Grambling down 55-45 at the break.
SSU led by 14 early in the second period before Grambling put together a 22-2 run to grab a 75-69 lead with 13:40 remaining.
The game was tied at 85 with just under eight minutes left and the Tigers trailed 91-90 after a 3-pointr by
Casey Wells with 5:38 remaining.
Grambling answered Wells' shot with a 12-3 spurt to go ahead 103-93 with 2:48 left in the game.
McClanahan had a career-high 27 points for Savannah State (2-5). He also had seven rebounds and three steals.
Troyce Manassa added 21 points while
Austin Dasent had 13 points and a career-high 11 assists. Wells chipped in 11 points and
Joshua Floyd had 10 points.
SSU ended the game shooting 58.1 percent from the floor, 45.9 percent from 3-point land while making 71.4 percent of their free throws.
Grambling (2-4) received a game-high 36 points from Mitchell.
GSU out-rebounded Savannah State 36 to 31 while shooting 54.8 from the floor and making 41.9 of their shots from beyond the arc. Grambling made 60 percent of their free throws.
