DESTIN, Fla.- St. Francis Brooklyn went the final two and a half minutes without a field goal but held on to defeat Savannah State 97-91 in a game played at the Destin Realty Emerald Gold Coast Classic.
SSU trailed 76-74 with 7:44 left in the second period but a 13-1 spurt by St. Francis put Savannah State in a 89-75 hole with 4:33 remaining.
The Tigers used 3-pointers from
Troyce Manassa and
Dexter McClanahan to get within six with just over a minute left but could get no closer.
Savannah State led by 10 points with 3:15 left in the first half before St. Francis ended the period with a 15-2 run and went into intermission with a 45-42 edge.
The Tigers outscored St. Francis 9-3 to start the second half.
Manassa led SSU (2-4) with a season-high 22 points.
Austin Dasent added 18 points and 4 assists, McClanahan had 16 points and a game-high 8 rebounds and Robert Kelly chipped in 10 points.
SSU shot 51.7 percent from the field in the second half and 45.9 percent for the game. The Tigers made nine 3-pointers in the second half and 16 for the game (45.7 percent).
St. Francis, who out-rebounded SSU 41 to 32, was led by Glenn Sanabria's 28 points and 4 assists.
The Brooklyn based school ended the contest shooting 48.4 percent from the field and making 40 percent of their 3-point attempts.
St. Francis improved to 1-3.
