HAMPTON, Va.- Yahkee Johnson's 35-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner as Hampton rallied to beat Savannah State 28-24, in a game played at Armstrong Stadium.
The loss, snapped a two-game SSU winning streak.
Savannah State found themselves down 21-3 in the second quarter but scored 21 straight points to grab a 24-21 lead with 13:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Freshman quarterback TJ Bell scored on a five yard run with 53 seconds left in the second quarter to send SSU into intermission down 21-10.
Midway in the third quarter,
Nicholas Bentley scored on a one yard run to pull the Tigers within 21-17 and early in the fourth quarter, SSU defender Stefan Banks sacked Hampton quarterback Jaylian Williamson, causing him to fumble the ball and Marcus Lee recovered it in the end-zone for a touchdown to give Savannah State a 24-21 lead.
The Pirates (5-4, 5-2 MEAC) responded by marching 71 yards in seven plays for the go-ahead touchdown by Johnson with 10:18 remaining.
SSU started their final drive of the day from the Hampton 37. The possession was set up when Banks intercepted a Williamson pass at the Pirates 40.
Savannah State (3-5, 3-3 MEAC) drove to the Hampton 26 but Bell was sacked on back-to-back plays by Devan Johnson, to end any chances of a comeback. The first sack was a 11 yard loss at the Hampton 37 and the second was for a 13 yard loss at mid-field.
Eric Carter gave Hampton a 7-0 with 3:45 left in the first quarter. The Pirates extended their lead to 14-0 with 9:04 remaining in the second quarter after Williamson tossed a 24 yard touchdown pass to TJ Mixson.
John Barron got the Tigers on the scoreboard with 4:52 left in the half with a 28-yard field goal.
14 seconds later, Hampton's Chasae Powell returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown, to give the Pirates a 21-3 cushion.
The crowd of 4,123 saw the SSU offense get 229 yards while its defense sack the quarterback four times, intercept a pass and recover two fumbles.
TJ Bell threw for 150 yards, Arshon Spaulding ran for 79 yards and Tino Smith caught four passes for 68 yards. Banks anchored the defense with seven tackles and three sacks.
Hampton had 254 yards of offense while the defense had three sacks.
Williamson passed for 149 yards and a touchdown, Yahkee Johnson ran for 112 yards and a touchdown and Mixson caught five passes for 66 yards and a score. Devan Johnson had 13 tackles and two sacks for the Pirates defenders.
