Savannah State Loses To Bulldogs

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- The road woes continue for Savannah State as the Tigers lost to South Carolina State 32-0 in a game played at Dawson Stadium.

The SSU offense was held to under 200 yards while the Tiger defense yielded almost 400 yards on the day.

South Carolina State led 6-0 after the first quarter but broke the game open with 20 points in the second quarter to take a 26-0 advantage into the half.


The Bulldogs first two scores came as a result of SSU turnovers.

On their opening possession, SSU quarterback T.J. Bell threw a interception that was picked off by Philip Henry who returned it 36 yards to the Tigers 18. That led to a 18 yard touchdown reception by Darius Leonard with 13:44 left in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Shaquan Brock recovered a fumble by SSU's De\rek Kirkland at the Tigers 32 and that led to a one yard touchdown run by Bishop Ford with 12:36 left in the first half.

With 6:18 left in the second quarter, SCSU went ahead 19-0 after a three-yard touchdown scamper by Ford and with 24 seconds left before intermission, Quan Caldwell had a seven yard touchdown reception to send the Bulldogs into the half with a 26-0 cushion.

Savannah State only entered South Carolina State territory twice in the first half. Their deepest penetration was to the  Bulldogs 14. The drive was halted when John Barron's 38 yard field goal attempt was blocked with eight minutes left in the first quarter.

Midway in the fourth quarter, South Carolina State found the end zone again as Adrian Kollock scored on a four yard run for a 32-0 lead.

Savannah State found some momentum on their ensuing possession as they reached the Bulldog 17 but Blake Dever had his pass intercepted by Marquise Jerome in the end zone.

The Bulldogs took over an ran out the clock for the win, which halted their three game losing skid.

Savannah State ran the ball for 118 yards but only had 70 passing yards.

Bell had 42 yards on the ground while Cantrell Frazier added 40 rushing yards. Dever threw for 48 yards and Tino Smith had four receptions for 43 yards.

Defensively, Mulik Simmons and David Crowley each had eight tackles.

For SCSU, Ford ran for 84 yards and a touchdown, Caleb York passed for 85 yards and a touchdown. Ten different players had at least one catch for the Bulldogs. Darius Leonard led all defenders with ten tackles.

South Carolina State had 254 rushing yards and 138 passing yards while the defense had three interceptions, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
