Tigers Open Season With Loss To Iowa State

AMES, Iowa- Monte Morris scored 21 points and dished out 11 assists to lead 24th ranked Iowa State to a 113-71 victory over visiting Savannah State. It was the season opener for both squads.

Savannah State, who scored in triple digits in both of their exhibition contests, struggled against the Cyclones, shooting 32.9 percent from the field and 27.1 from beyond the arch.

Iowa State controlled the boards, out-rebounding Savannah State, 62 to 36.

The game was close in the opening minutes and a 3-pointer by Dexter McClanahan gave the Tigers an 11-10 edge with 16:07 on the clock.

But ISU responded with a 11-3 spurt to go ahead by seven.

Ahead 26-20 with just over nine minutes on the clock, the Cyclones extended their cushion to 24 points with a 20-2 run.

SSU answered with a 3-pointer from Casey Wells and a layup and a free throw from Jordan Gaines to get within 18 but that would be as close they would get the rest of the period.

Iowa State led 59-38 at the break.

During the first period, the Cyclones out-scored SSU 34-8 in the paint and 17-1 on second chance points.

The Tigers opened the second half with a dunk by Jahir Cabeza and a pair of free throws by Joshua Floyd to trim their deficit to 59-42 but nine unanswered points by Iowa State gave the Cyclones a 26 point lead with 17:44 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Robert Kelly got the Tigers within 76-56 with 12:59 left but ISU responded with 13 straight points to go ahead by 33.

With seven and a half minutes left, Iowa State led by 37 and a 3-pointer by Jacolby Long at the 1:24 mark gave the Cyclones their largest lead of the evening at 111-68.

A layup by Kelly at the 4:46 mark was Savannah State's last field goal of the game.

Floyd led four SSU players in double figures with 12 points and four assists.

Cabeza, McClanahan and Zach Seller all added 10 points apiece.

Cabeza had four steals and Gained had six rebounds for the Tigers.
