Mendez Elder and Charles Sikes both hit doubles while Austin Denny struck out four batters but Alabama Birmingham scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in a 2-1 win over Savannah State.

The fans at Regions Field saw UAB load the bases in the first inning but come away empty. The Blazers (4-0) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Adam Smith hit a RBI single that scored Mitch Williams.

UAB starter Alex Luna, who had a no hitter through six innings, gave up two hits in the top of the seventh.

Elder led off with a double to center. After
Jonathan Moore struck out and
David Richards grounded out, Sikes doubled to left field that scored Elder to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, Brett Blackwood led off with a triple and was replaced on the base-pads by Matt Morse. After walks to Adam Lau and Williams were intentionally walked, Tyler Mims singled home the game winning run.

Denny pitched seven innings for SSU (3-2) while
Rex Davis and Michael Sailros came on in relief.

Blackwood had two hits for UAB while Luna went eight innings and struck out eight batters.
