Women’s Tennis Drops Opening Matches



SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Savannah State women's tennis opened the 2015 spring season at Wofford College and Presbyterian College on Saturday.  

The Lady Tigers opened the day at Wofford College in Spartanburg with a 0-7 loss, and finished the day in Clinton, South Carolina with a 1-6 loss to Presbyterian College.

SSU sophomore Kamelia Dimitrova, playing in the number one position in singles competition, defeated Presbyterian's Brittany Nuttall in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1. In doubles action, Dimitrova teamed up with Sandy Lochu to beat Greer Ransom and Demi Henschel 6-4 in the first court.

Lochu fell to Claire Andrews in the second court of singles action in two sets, 4-6 and 2-6. Jennyfer Vivas dropped the third court to Caroline deLoach 0-6 and 0-6.

Playing in the fourth position, Bria Burrows fell to Sara McBride 0-6 and 0-6. Tiffany Williams fell to Antonia Conze 0-6 and 1-6 to round out singles action. SSU did not field a player in the sixth court, losing by default.

Vivas and Burrows fell to Andrews and Nuttall in the second court of doubles action, 0-6. Presbyterian won the third doubles court by default.

After falling to Wofford's Audrey Coventry in the first set, Lochu fired back with a 6-2 win in the second set, forcing a tie-breaker. Coventry won the close third set 10-7 to win the second court.

Dimitrova fell to Wofford's Catherine Martin in the first set 3-6, but put up a stronger fight in the second set, falling 5-7.

Vivas dropped the third court to Kalli Karas in two sets, 0-6 and 1-6. Burrows fell to Samantha Russell in straight sets, 0-6 and 0-6. Williams fell to Laruen Reid 0-6 and 0-6. SSU lost the sixth court by default.

In doubles action, Dimitrova and Lochu fell to Karas and Reid 4-6 in the first court, while Vivas and Burrows fell to Martin and Sanchez Mareli in the second court, 0-6. Wofford won the third court by default to claim the doubles point.

SSU plays their first home game of the 2015 season on Feb. 7 against Albany State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on the Tiger Tennis Courts.
