After two days rest, the Savannah State Tigers and Bethune-Cookman Wildcats will meet for the first time in the semifinal round of the double elimination tournament. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played yesterday at 1 p.m., was pushed back a day because of inclement weather in the Norfolk area on Thursday. The weather conditions forced conference officials to cancel all games on Thursday and resume tournament action Friday morning.
The winner of today's game will advance to the Championship game to be played on Monday at 11 a.m. The loser will face Norfolk State in the loser's bracket game today at 5 p.m. for a chance to play in Monday's Championship.
The Tigers have faced the Wildcats six times this year with B-CU leading the season series 4-2. SSU, who has defeated #1 North Delaware and #2 South Florida A&M to advance to the semifinal game, is hoping to extend its conference winning streak. The Tigers have won their last seven of nine conference games.
In SSU's last game against Florida A&M, the Tigers pounded out 20 hits and outscored Florida A&M 12-1 in the final four innings in a 14-6 win in the second day of action in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
Mender Elder and
Parker Nix each had four hits for the Tigers. Elder drove in three runs and scored twice.
David Richards had three hits and scored three times while
Aaron Hoffer and
Zachary Brigham both drove in three runs. Hoffer also scored twice.
Todd Hagen had two hits and scored twice and Charles "Tre" Sikes scored three times, had two hits and drove in two runs.
Â
Brandon Whitmore started for the Tigers (22-29) and pitched 3.1 innings. Whitmore gave up seven hits and five runs before being relieved by
Austin Robinson who pitched 1.2 innings and gave up one hit.
Kevin Herlihy pitched the final four innings and gave up two hits and one run. Robinson was awarded the win while Herlihy earned the save.
Bethune-Cookman, who came into the tournament as the #1 South seed after posting 14-10 conference record, has dropped five of its last seven games, but has won its last two in the Tournament. The Wildcats hitting is led by Eric Sams who leads the team on batting (.324), runs (42), hits (67), doubles (14) and slugging percentage (.415).
