Austin Denney and
Brandon Whitmore combined to strike out 16 batters as Savannah State swept a pair of games from North Carolina Central at Tiger Field by scores of 6-3 and 5-3.
In the first game, the Tigers jumped out to a 5-1 lead on NCCU on April 18 before the game was called due to rain in the top of the second inning.
The contest resumed on April 19 and SSU went on to get the three-run win.
Both teams scored a run in the second inning and NCCU scored again in the top of the sixth.
Parker Nix and
Hector Benitez each had two hits for SSU and Nix scored twice.
Brandon Wallace started the game for the Tigers but Denney struck out eight batters and scattered eight hits in eight innings in relief.
Carter Williamson and James Dey each had three hits for the Eagles while Kyle Shields was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs.
NCCU out-hit the Tigers 11 to 7 but also made five errors. Both teams left seven runners on base.
Savannah State improved to 15-24 overall and 6-11 in the conference with the win in the second game as Whitmore struck out eight batters in 4.2 innings.
Kevin Herlihy came on to pitch 2.1 innings in relief and struck out three batters to earn the win.
NCCU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Tigers tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Charles Sikes.
Christian Triplett hit a solo home run for the Eagles (15-24, 10-9) in the fourth but SSU third baseman
Zachary Brigham led off the bottom of the inning with a single and scored on a single by
Ian Farris to tie the game at 3-3.
In the fifth inning,
Lee Moore hit a two run single that scored Sikes and Benitez for a 5-3 lead which proved to be the last runs of the contest.
The Tigers had nine hits and left nine runners on base while NCCU had six hits and stranded five runners.
Sikes, Brigham and Moore all had two hits apiece for Savannah State. Sikes drove in two runs and scored twice while Moore drove in a pair of runs.
Zack Lee had two hits for Central while Terry McNabb, who pitched 4.1 innings and struck out four, was tagged with the loss. McNabb gave up seven hits, five runs and three walks.
