Herlihy Lifts SSU Over Bucs

Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C.- With two outs in the top of the ninth, Kevin Herlihy hit a two run single that proved to be the game winner as Savannah State posted a 7-5 victory over Charleston Southern at the CSU Ballpark.
 
SSU entered the ninth inning with the game tied at 5-5.
 
Marcus Wojtkowicz fouled out but Brandon Miller and Hector Benitez followed with a double and single respectively. Todd Hagen was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
 
Michael McHugh struck out for the second out but Herlihy singled to left field which allowed Miller and Benitez to score. The Tigers half of the inning ended with a strikeout by Charles Sikes.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Andrew Widell singled but no other CSU player reached base as Savannah State hung on to grab the non-conference win.
 
SSU improved to 11-18 with the victory.
 
Four Tiger pitchers combined to hold CSU to just seven hits.
 
Hunter Ross lasted one inning but Ethan Glass and Austin Robinson pitched three innings apiece while Eric Ricks, who was awarded the win struck out two batters in his two innings of work.
 
Savannah State scored three times in the first inning.
 
The Tigers loaded the bases with Todd Hagen,McHugh and Lee Moore all hitting singles. Sikes followed with a two run double that scored Hagen and McHugh. After Zachary Brigham struck out, Parker Nix's sacrifice fly allowed Sikes to score.
 
SSU collected three hits in the top of the second but could only score once. Benitez doubled and crossed home plate after a single by Hagen to increase their lead to 4-0.
 
Charleston Southern had the bases loaded in the bottom of inning and was able to cut their deficit in half by scoring twice.
 
The Buccaneers tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs.
 
Both squads scored runs in the seventh.
 
Benitez led off with a single and scored on a fielder's choice by McHugh for SSU while Widell hit a RBI single for Charleston Southern.
 
SSU had 13 hits and one error while the Buccaneers (16-15) left 12 runners on base.
 
Hagen went 3 for 3 for the Tigers at the plate while Benitez went 3 for 4 and scored three times. McHugh contributed two hits and Herlihy and Sikes drove in two runs apiece.
 
Austin Weekley was tagged with the loss for CSU. Weekley pitched two innings and gave up two hits and two runs while striking out two. Bobby Ison had two hits and drove in two runs.
