Tigers Split With A&T

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State split a double header with visiting North Carolina A&T at Tiger Field, winning the opener 10-0 and losing the second game 15-1.
 
In the first game, the Tigers pounded out 13 hits while Austin Denney pitched a three hitter and struck out six batters.
 
SSU scored three runs in the first inning and added four more in the third, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
 
In the bottom of the first, Todd Hagen led off with a walk and with one out, Charles Sikes singled to the shortstop. With two outs, Mendez Elder doubled to score Hagen and Sikes later scored on a balk by the pitcher. Elder stole home for the final run in the inning for a 3-0 lead.
 
Sikes and Aaron Hoffer led off the third with back to back singles. Sikes scored on a sacrifice fly by Zachary Brigham while Hoffer scored on an error by the third baseman. Ian Farris singled home Lee Moore, who hit a single earlier for a 7-0 cushion.
 
In the sixth, Brigham led off with a double and scored on a single by Kevin Herlihy. Hagen grounded out to third but it allowed Herlihy to score to increase the Tigers lead to 9-0.
 
The final run of the contest came with two outs in the seventh. Moore and Michael McHugh both singled and Moore scored on a double by Herlihy.
 
Herlihy had three hits, drove in two runs and scored twice for SSU. Sikes and Moore each had two hits and scored twice while Farris drove in two runs.
 
Tyler Boone took the loss for the Aggies while striking out four in 5.2 innings.
 
In the second game, A&T jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back.
 
The Aggies scored three runs in the second inning and sent six runners across home plate in the top of the third.
 
Savannah State prevented a shutout in the fourth when Elder led off with a walk and scored on a ground-out by Marcus Wojtkowicz to make the score 9-1.
 
Luke Tender hit a solo home run for A&T (10-12, 5-3) in the sixth and the Aggies scored five times in the seventh to round out the scoring.
 
Zach McCormack took the loss for SSU (8-14, 2-6) giving up eight runs and five hits in 2.1 innings.
 
Charles Cantrell was the game winner as he pitched all seven innings and gave up five hits. Tender had two hits for A&T while scoring twice and driving in three runs.
