Spartans Take DH From Savannah State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NORFOLK, Va.- Norfolk State posted a double-header sweep over Savannah State at Miller Field.
 
The Spartans won the opener 14-4 and finished the second game with a 2-0 shutout victory.
 
In the first game, NSU scored three times in the first inning and added four runs in the fifth and six more in the seventh.
 
Savannah State (3-7)scored once in the top of the first when Mendez Elder scored a unearned run thanks to a throwing error by the catcher. The Tigers scored two unearned runs in the fifth as Todd Hagen and Elder crossed home plate while in the eighth, Mike McHugh doubled home Hector Benitez.
 
Elder had two hits and scored twice for the Tigers. Brandon Whitmore was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs and three walks in 4.1 innings. SSU only had five hits and made four errors.
 
Zach Markey drove in four runs for the Spartans while getting three hits and scoring three times. Justin Bhatti struck out four in the win.
 
In the nightcap, three NSU pitchers combined to limit the Tigers to one hit which was a double by Charles Sikes in the second inning.
 
Austin Robinson was tagged with the loss for the Tigers, giving up two runs off six hits in six innings.
 
Tyon Ore had three hits for Norfolk State (3-6) while Matt Outman earned the win and Devin Hemmerich got the save.
