It's mid-February and Savannah State baseball team is looking to defend their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship as they start the 2014 season with a double-header at Presbyterian College on February 15.

Coming off a 33-23 record, head coach Carlton Hardy has the Tigers training hard to improve their game and get ready for the season.

Last season, the Tigers won the MEAC Tournament Championship for the first time, defeating Bethune-Cookman 1-0. From there, the Tigers advanced to the NCAA tournament for the first time since leaving Division II.

Gone are top pitchers Kyle McGowin and Jack May, but vying to take their spot are returnees Rexford Davis, Ethan Glass, Ross Hunter and Sherman Graves.

Davis had a 4.31 earned run average last year but a 6-2 record. Glass posted a 3-5 mark with 27 strikeouts while Hunter was 1-2 and Graves had a 2-2 record.

Also back is veteran reliever Eric Ricks. The 6-4, 205 Savannah native struck out 33 batters in 38 innings a year ago and finished the season with a 3-1 record and 2.61 ERA.

Top hitters back are Todd Hagen, David Richards, Mendez Elder, Lee Moore, Parker Nix and Kevin Herlihy.
Hagen started 54 games last year and hit .321. The 5-9 senior also led the squad in runs and hits and was tied for the team lead in doubles with Nix.

Richards batted .308, led the team in triples  and was tied for the team lead in home runs.

Sophomores Elder and Moore had a good freshmen year with Elder batting .306 with 44 hits while Moore hit .295.
Playing their final year in a Tiger uniform are Nix and Herlihy. Nix was third on the team with hits while batting .284 while Herlihy had 44 hits.

The Tigers play their home opener on Feb. 18 against Georgia State.
