Tigers Fall to Winthrop in the Road

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C.- Terel Hall continued his scoring frenzy for Savannah State with 15 points and five steals but the Tigers would fall to Winthrop 68-47 in Winthrop Coliseum.
 
The crowd of 804 saw SSU drop their fifth road game of the season as they fell to 2-5 overall.
 
Savannah State jumped out to a 7-3 advantage.
 
The teams traded back-to-back 3-pointers as SSU's Treyvon Francis opened the game with a trey and the Eagles' Jarad Scott answered with a game-tying 3-pointer.
 
Hall made back-to-back layups to give the visitors a four-point lead with 16:14 on the clock.
 
Winthrop replied with a 14-1 run to go ahead 17-8.
 
When Savannah State closed their gap to 20-16, the Eagles scored seven straight points to increase their leads to 29-16 at the 2:22 mark.
 
A 3-pointer by Alante Fenner got the Tigers within 31-23 with just under a minute left but Winthrop closed the period with a dunk by Tevin Prescott and took a 33-23 lead into the half.
 
Winthrop scored the first eight points of the second half to grab a 41-23 lead with 16:10 on the clock.
 
It took the Tigers nearly five minutes to score in the second half.
 
Reserve forward Brian Perason's jumper with 15:07 left broke the drought for SSU.
 
Andre Smith answered Pearson's shot with a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 44-25 lead.
 
After the Tigers trimmed their deficit to 16, Winthrop (3-2) reeled off nine unanswered points for a 55-30 lead with 10:13 remaining.
 
The Savannah State deficit grew to 27 with 4:21 left but the Tigers strung together a 10-2 run to get within 66-47 with just under a minute remaining.
 
Fenner finished with 11 points and six rebounds for SSU while Pearson contributed nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
 
Savannah State was cold from the field, shooting 29 percent.
 
Winthrop, who shot 44.6 percent from the field, out-rebounded the Tigers 44 to 39.
 
Scott led three Winthrop players with 15 points.
 
Savannah State defeated Winthrop 59-58 on November 20 in Tiger Arena.
