Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Savannah State had their two game winning streak snapped after a 87-26 loss to 6th ranked Louisville in a game played at the KFC Yum! Center.
Â
The Tigers fell behind quickly and never recovered.
Â
"We started two freshmen and two sophomores. We have five freshman and four sophomores on this team. One senior just dressed today, everybody is an underclassman. So the future within our parameter looks bright, but competing against the top ACC teams in the country is going to be tough for this program,"said SSU head coach
Horace Broadnax.
Â
Louisville scored the first 29 points of the game as SSU missed their first 23 shots from the field.
Â
Savannah State scored their first points of the contest on a free throw by
Saadiq Muhammad with 4:02 left in the first period.
Â
With 1:23 left before intermission,
Khalen Pinkett hit a short jumper for the Tigers first field goal of the game.
Â
Louisville led 41-7 at the break.
Â
Despite falling behind early, Broadnax said his team did not get discouraged.
Â
"No, I don't feel for [us] because I tell them 'It's your preparation.' What you take from this game is what you take from this game, meaning I have to [go] back and work hard. Your preparation will be rewarded. You are rewarded based on your preparation. We lift weights. We've got 10-foot goals. We have 94 feet. We have 24 hours just like Louisville. It's just how we use our 24 hours. [We] need to use them a little bit better and I need to prepare them a little bit better,"said Broadnax.
Â
The loss drops Savannah State to 2-3 on the young season but Bradnax says that his young squad will learn from this and move on.
Â
"We've got a lot of work to do. We're young. We've just got a lot of work to do. I don't want to lose the season on one game. As a coach, I could've been in the locker room kicking and threatening and all that and then I lose a kid. It's a long season. We still have 20 to 30 games to go, so I don't want to lose these kids on a game like this,"states the 10th year coach.
Â
The Cardinals (4-0) opened the second period with a 10-0 run to run their lead to 44 points.
Â
After a layup by
Alante Fenner and a free throw by Muhammad cut SSU's deficit to 51-9, Louisville answered with a 18-3 spurt to increase their advantage to 69-12 with 10:19 remaining.
Â
A 11-4 run by Louisville gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the contest at 87-24 with 2:03 left on the clock.
Â
"I've got a young team, I've got a very young team. I've said it in the past that if this is the worst that ever happens to these kids, they're going to have a great life," said Broadnax after the 61-point setback.
Â
Fenner had eight points and six rebounds to pace the Tigers.
Â
The crowd of 19,514 witnessed SSU have a tough night from on floor, offensively.
Â
The Tigers shot 19.6 percent from the field and missed all 16 of their 3-point attempts.
Â
Louisville, who won the rebounding battle 54 to 28, ended the game shooting 52.4 percent from the field.
Â
The Cardinals had four players in double figures and were led by Montrezl Harrells' 15 points and nine rebounds.
