The Game
Savannah State
Bethune-Cookman is coming to T.A. Wright Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday, and Savannah State head coach Earnest Wilson III said the Wildcats will be one of SSU's biggest challenges this season.
Â
Bethune-Cookman (5-1 overall, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) is tied for first place in the MEAC with North Carolina Central.
Â
The Wildcats have beaten Football Bowl Subdivision member Florida International University in each of the past two seasons. B-CU is No. 16 in The Sports Network poll, No. 14 in the Football Championship Subdivision Coaches poll.
Â
SSU (0-6, 0-3 MEAC) is coming off a 24-14 loss to Florida A&M last Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla., while B-CU enters off a 49-12 victory over Howard last Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Â
To beat B-CU, Wilson said SSU will need its juniors and seniors to show more leadership and tenacity.
Â
Wilson said Tino Smith, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound freshman from Carmel, Ind., will start at quarterback in place of Leon Prunty, who is sidelined with a knee injury he suffered Oct. 4 against Norfolk State.
Â
Smith is 55-of-98 passing (56.1 percent) for 492 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He started against FAMU and finished 27-of-44 passing for 290 yards, including a touchdown. He was intercepted one time against the Rattlers.
Â
SSU running back Richard Williams, a 5-foot-8, 190-pound sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., has run for a team-high 123 yards, including a touchdown, on 31 carries. Running back Joshua Berry, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound freshman from nearby Ludowici, has run for 100 yards 23 carries.
Â
Slot receiver Cantrell Frazier, a 5-foot-11, 193-pound junior from Fulton County, Ga., has made a team-high 21 catches for 211 yards and two touchdowns.
Â
Defensively, the Tigers are led by linebacker Marquis Smith, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound sophomore from Prince Georges County, Md., who has made a team-high 39 tackles, including six sacks, in five games. Linebacker Justin Dixon, a 5-foot-11, 225-pound junior from Duluth, Ga., is second on the team in tackles with 36 in six games.
Â
RECRUITS COMING TO SSU
When it comes to recruiting, SSU has made the most of its two home games on Sept. 13 against Fort Valley State and Oct. 4 against Norfolk State.
Â
"The first (home) game, we had 80 recruits come in," Wilson said. "In the second (home) game, we had 102. Knock on wood, we hope to continue recruiting that way. This is a blessing, and we've just got to keep building and doing what we do."
Â
In previous years, SSU usually had the bulk of its recruits visit for one or two games. That's not the case under Wilson, who is in his second season at the helm.
Â
"We've opened it up to all the games," he said. "We've just been fortunate enough to have the kids come. Last week, we had recruits in from 10 different states, all the way from Virginia and Maryland to Louisiana. We're continuing to look at (local recruits). I can't tell you (because of NCAA rules) who we're looking at but we're continuing to look at them. A lot of people are chasing us now. And we're turning some guys down. Our (summer) camp (in June) really helped. The kids are learning our philosophy so that's helpful. We've been real happy about how everything is coming about."
