TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-
Jack May pitched six strong innings but it would not be enough as Savannah State were eliminated from the NCAA Baseball Tournament following a 3-2 loss to Alabama in a game played at Howser Stadium.
With the game scoreless after three innings, Alabama scored twice in the top of the fourth as Austen Smith hit a RBI double and Breet Booth hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mikey White who earlier singled.
The Tide added another run in the fifth. Kenny Roberts doubled and scored on a single by Georgie Salem for a 3-0 lead.
Savannah State, who had runners in scoring position four times in the first seven innings, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth.
Todd Hagen led off with a single followed by a double by
Kevin Herlihy which allowed Hagen to score.
Drew Quinney was called to pinch for
Mendez Elder and delivered with a RBI double that scored Herlihy to make the score 3-2.
Jason Wynn, who was inserted to pinch run for Quinney, advanced to third on a pass ball. After
David Richards struck out, Parkner Nix reached on a fielder's choice and Wynn was thrown out at home.
Chris Arnold grounded out to end the inning.
Alabama (35-27) left two runners on base in the ninth but were unable to score.
In the bottom of the inning, SSU had a runner on base with one out but
Joseph McCrary gounded into a double play that ended the game as well as the Tigers 2013 season with a 33-23 record.
Both squads ended the contest with nine hits. SSU left seven runners on base while 'Bama stranded six.
May gave up seven hits and three runs while striking out two and walking one.
Ethan Glass and Ericks combined to pitch three scoreless innings in relief.
Roberts went 3 for 4 for the Tide with a pair of doubles. Mike Oczypok was the winner, striking out four in seven scoreless innings.
