Tigers Advance To MEAC Title Game

NORFOLK, Va.- The Savannah State baseball team advanced to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title game with a 14-7 victory over Coppin State at Miller Field.
Peter Poole and Drew Quinnery homered for SSU (32-21) while Todd Hagen drove in four runs and David Richards had four hits.
Jack May tolled from the rubber for seven innings as he struck out five batters.
Coppin State led 1-0 in the top of the second but the Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning as Chris Arnold hit a two run single and Hagen belted a two run double.
In the third, Richards hit a RBI double while Lee Moore's sacrifice flyout to center field scored Parker Nix, who earlier singled for a 6-1 lead.
SSU went ahead 9-1 in the fourth. Poole hit a two run home run while Mendez Elder tripled and scored on a double by Richards.
Chris Godfrey hit a three run double in the fifth as CSU (18-32) scored four runs to slice their deficit to 9-5.

In the bottom of the inning, Darien Campbell singled to right and scored on a double by Hagen to make the score 10-5.

The Tigers added one run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to increase their advantage to  14-5.

In the seventh, Moore reached on a throwing error, Arnold walked and Darien Campbell singled to load the bases. Hagen was hit by a pitch while allowed Moore to score. In the eighth, Nix led off with a walk and crossed home plate after a double by Richards while Quinney hit a two run home run that also scored Richards.

Coppin State scored two runs on four hits in the top of the ninth.

Godfrey had three hits, three RBI and scored three runs for CSU. Myles Taylor took the loss, giving up four runs in 1.2 innings.

CSU made two errors and left 11 runners on base. The Tigers pounded out 15 hits while leaving nine runners on base.

Savannah State will play Bethune-Cookman for the conference championship on May 19 at 11am at Miller Field.
