Strong hitting propels Tigers to 21-11 win over Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va.- Savannah State broke open a tie game with 11 runs in the final two innings in a 21-11 win over Norfolk State on the second day of action in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament played at Marty L. Miller Field.
SSU finished with 22 hits and the 21 runs were the most scored by SSU this season.
The team has now won 31 games, the most since the 2007 season.
The Tigers advance to the winner's bracket final at 1 p.m. on May 18 against the winner between Coppin State and North Carolina A&T. The Spartans (19-28) play an elimination game at 10 a.m. May 17 against North Carolina Central.
With the score tied at 11, SSU added four runs off three hits in the seventh and scored seven times off three hits in the eighth.
Eric Ricks earned the win, pitching the final 3.2 innings. The Savannah, Ga. native gave up five hits and two runs but issued no walks and struck out three.
Norfolk State left 10 men on base and committed five errors while the Tigers left 12 on base and made two errors.
The Spartans found themselves trailing 4-0 after two innings.
Joseph McCrary hit a RBI triple and Lee Moore hit a RBI single in the first inning while Parker Nix hit a two run single for the Tigers (31-21) in the second inning. Todd Hagen, who led off with a double, scored the first run for SSU followed by McCrary. Nix's double drove home Hagen and Mendez Elder in the second.
NSU scored twice in the top of the third but Savannah State answered with four runs as Moore, Chris Arnold, Daren Campbell and Elder all crossed home plate for a 8-2 lead.
The Spartans tied the game in the top of the fourth with six runs.  Andre' Moore hit a two run single and Cameron Day hit a two run triple to anchor the big inning for NSU.
David Richards left off the bottom of the fourth with a single and scored after a single by Campbell to put SSU ahead 9-8.
Both squads scored single unearned runs in the fifth. NSU left the bases loaded but  Ryan Montgomery scored the only run while the Tigers left two on base and Hagen was able to cross home plate for a 10-9 SSU advantage.
A two run triple by Moore in the sixth gave Norfolk State a 11-10 lead but it would be the last runs of the day for the tournament hosts as the Tigers finished the game with 11 unanswered runs.
McCrary, Nix, Richards and Moore all crossed home plate for Savannah State in the seventh for a 14-10 lead. In the eighth, Poole. Elder, McCrary, Nix, Richards, Arnold and Hagen scored for SSU.
The game was stopped with two outs and one runner on base.
Hagen and Moore both went 4-for-6 for SSU while Nix and Elder added three hits apiece. Hagen also scored four times and drove in three runs. Nix drove in three runs while Elder, McCrary and Richards scored three runs each.
Moore went 3 of 4 and drove in four runs for NSU. Ray Morton took the loss, giving up four runs in 1.2 innings.
